95 GT-40: Tach erratic & Fuel leak from pump into port connection

Two issues with my "new" 95 SN with a 351 Ford GT-40 PCM.

    1) Tachometer reads accurate about 75% of the time, but 25% of the time it reads high...as in about 1,000 RPM high. Would this be a ground issue? Follow the wires back to where? It doesn't bounce...just reads high. For example normally MPH is about 2-3 less than RPM. When it's off, the tach may show 3,000 RPM though I'm pulling a trick skier at 16 mph. Next day, it might be fine.

    2) I have a fuel drip from the assembly coming out of the fuel pump on the engine. The connectors are crammed into a small area but I'm certain the leak is from the connections, not the pump itself. Is there a flex wire I could use instead of this mess? Click image for larger version

Open your dash to get to the back of the tach and find the cylinder selector switch. Cycle it through the 4,6 and 8 cylinder settings a bunch of times then make sure the setting is back on 8. The contacts inside get corroded and gives a false reading- a very common problem. Cycling it through it's settings cleans off the internal contacts. The fuel system mess is factory. Double wrench it and check that it is tight. If that does not work you might have to take it completely apart to check it out. It's not the original pump maybe the PO did not get it tight or lined up right

Thank you. I should have asked the question sooner. Just had the dash apart last weekend installing a depth finder.

regarding the fuel pump...is there a better replacement? I do recall the PO saying it was replaced 5 years ago. Overall the boat runs really well, but there is hesitation initially if I hit the throttle hard from idle. I have to ease into it.

I have 2001 SAN with faria gauges. Last weekend it was like 108, not saying it was the reason why, but both tachometer and speedometer were going crazy (speedometer jumping and tach going over my ~1k rpm). Do you think corroded contacts might be the reason?

Anyone with a 95 with the GT-40 engine that has an original fuel pump? Would love to understand how different the replacement above is from the original. I don't believe it was until later years that the fuel pump was quite a bit larger.

That fuel pump in your picture is the low pressure pump, they are the same on every GT40 ever made. In '96 PCM came out with the FCC- Fuel Control Cell which replaced the high pressure pump in your boat which is connected by those fittings that are leaking just above the low pressure pump. That HP pump is no longer available. There is a work around or you can get a retro fit kit to put on a FCC for a good chunk of 1K. The FCC contains a HP pump, filter and acts as a water separator. Most LP pumps by now have been replaced as yours has been. Originals were painted black when they painted the complete engine. Below is my 95 SS pumps. LP has been replaced as well.

Gary, it looks like you have replaced those fittings as well. Was that a kit, or a find at the local auto parts store?

I'm second owner, I bought it from N3. I know they changed the pump not sure about the fittings. I don't think you'd find them in just any old auto parts store. This is the connector between the two pumps - ,PCM part number R024165 . Then the high pressure pump inlet fitting R024168 Then the low pressure pump outlet fitting R024163. I think but am not 100% sure that this link is the aftermarket part-

You can look up those PCM parts yourself here- the other two parts look like off the shelf items. My guess is the connector is no longer available from them, but a call to Nautique Parts with those part numbers would confirm

Gary the red and blue fittings are OEM my '95 was the same, they are standard AN fittings that can be had from Summit Racing or Jegs.

I think this is the odd one that goes into the base of the high pressure pump https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ear-at991947erl
