Symptoms of a failing ProTec coil pack / EMS?

Hi

94 Sport Nautique with the proboss 5.8 HO with the Protec EFI.

For those who have had issues with the coil packs or engine management system what were the symptoms that caused you to replace it?

Mine were intemittant backfiring and hesitations around mid to upper range. Never had issues out of the hole. In addition, it never acted up really when it was cold, after about 10 minutes it started having fits. Went back to the Mallory distributor and wires and its been fine ever since.

Mine was a '94, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's your issue.

On my 93 the symptoms were pretty much the same as etwman, the warmer the motor got the worse it got, it even started having a difficult time restarting while hot. After the conversion kit from DIM I think it ran better than ever.

OK - Interesting. Both of you went to carburated systems and stopped using EFI?

I am having an intermittent engine miss. Happens while under load. It happened about 3 weeks ago. Boat has run fine since. Been about about 4 times. Then it came back last Tuesday. When it starts missing it is unusable. Then boat actually went back and worked fine after idling for about 15 minutes. Last 2 times out this past Fri and Sat the boat ran great. No issues.

Today it is in for some testing, new plugs, fuel filter.

Yeah I would trouble shoot the small stuff first. Do the filters, plugs, etc. It's a cheap elimination. If it still throws a temper tantrum then look into the CDI box. The problem with those CDI boxes is they act up when the want to which will drive you absolutlely nuts. You can't predict it and you can't make it act up.

My boat is carburated, If I remember correctly in 94 you had either option. It was their first year they had EFI out or you could go carb. But the CDI box was the same on each. That's where the problem was, no doubt.

Thanks for the reply. I have the EFI and the only way I can keep it is to get the coil pack from PCM. (If it turns out to be the pack).

My 93 was the carburated Pro-Boss, the kit replaced the protec computer, trigger wheel, wires, etc.
