2003 SANTE overheating

I just purchased my first boat, a 2003 SANTE, and am running into some over heating issues right off the batt. I have tried to diagnose the issue pretty thoroughly but I am at a loss. I have changed the impeller and have hooked a garden hose from onto the outlet side of the strainer and ran the motor, I am getting good water out through the back pf the boat and the everything seems to be staying nice an cool. I have run water from the inlet side of the strainer, pushing water out through the inlet, there was plenty of flow in this direction. When everything is hooked back up, and I start the motor using a "fake-o-lake" I am not getting water out through the back of the boat. I then, unhooked the strainer again, ran the fake-o-lake, but got no water up through the strainer body. Does there need to be a prime in order for the fake-o-lake to work? Could this come down to a t-stat issue? When on the water, the boat over heats pretty rapidly at idle, I have been nervous to run the boat at speed with it overheating from the get go because I dont want to cause damage. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I am at a loss at this point.

Check all the hose connections from the thru hull to the raw water pump for tightness. Any air leak will cause a loss of suction....common problem.

Thanks Silent Seven........Ill go through all connections again this morning. I had tried to make sure everything was tight but I could have easily missed something

Are you sure you're putting the fake-a-lake on the right water port under the boat? There will be four on your boat -- three for ballast tanks and one for the engine.
