    Check Hours on 2000 GT 40

    Hello, I have a 2000 Ski Nautique with a GT40, because these boats had the Teleflex gauges and the hours were stored in the gauges and on my boat they had not been replaced the only proof I could find on hours so far is in the Perfect Pass, which I understand can be reset.
    I am trying to find out where my engine connector is on the GT 40, because I know that if connected by my tech he can see all the information about the engine to date, we cannot locate this connector, I looked at the schematics and it appears there should be a 6 pin connector but we cannot find any open 6pin connector only a 2 pin connector.
    Does anyone know where it is on the engine?

    What your calling the 6 pin connector is known as the STO connector even though there are only 4 wires in it. Won't help you though,Ford ECM's do not record hours. Once the original gauge is changed or the PP reset the hours are lost.

      Really?
      my original gauges are in place but don’t work, would the hours be in it still? Do you think?
      how do people deal with this on a sale?

        You ignore the hours and look at the overall condition of the boat and inspect the service records. Those are what really count in the first place.

          My telex gauges are also about shot.. once in a while they work well enough to make out the hours. I took a picture the best I could of the hours on both the gauge and perfect pass to now back into total hours.

          That said, as a last ditch effort, you could try to "repair" the gauge enough to get an hour read on it. There is a thread on this site talking about taking the gauge apart and resetting the ribbon cable where it attaches to the LCD. You might be able to get it done enough to pull off hours. That is my next project when I purchase replacement gauges.

            What are you trying to solve? Find the hours before you buy it or sell it? Sorry...wasn't clear to me.

            I tend to concur with charlesml3 that if you're a buyer, you're better off with an inspection on a 20 year old boat over the hour meter for all the reasons listed above. If you need some tips on what you can and should inspect, just put your hand up and I'm sure the board will help you.....

              I already purchased the boat, it’s a bit of a story but when I got to the boat the 350hrs was just on the honor system I discovered...
              I bought it despite that little hiccup in communication...
              and now it’s just I would love to know. And for future sale possibilities, who knows right?
              the boat is in very good condition.

                ah...got it. OK, here's a few thoughts... If it runs nice, idles nice and doesn't burn oil I wouldn't worry much about it. Maybe if it runs a bit odd, then some more poking around might be worthwhile. My last boat - 97 Ski Nautique had 1600 hours when I sold it and ran great and didn't burn any oil. Had tons of life left. My front seal on the transmission did go leading to oil in the bilge and me swapping the seal. That was just a hygiene issue.

                On higher hour boats (1200+...??) you may start to see more wear on things like the rudder shaft, cutlass bearing, shaft wear around the thruhull packing than you might see with engine internals. I'd maybe poke around and see how those items look.

                Looks like a nice boat...I bet all will be good.

                  I had the same issue on my Ski Nautique — 2001 model year. I couldn’t read the gauges so I had to rely on PerfectPass for the engine hours when I purchased the boat. PP showed 190 hours. The owner stated that the boat had under 200 hours. I was skeptical. Then I looked at the hull, prop, engine, etc. I soon became convinced that the 190 in PP was likely correct. I put in the Faria replacement tach and speedo but kept PP for hours verification. I don’t plan on selling this boat for a long time, but I may have to deal with the hours “issue” eventually.

                    As others have mentioned, once the original Teleflex gauges go, you're screwed. Perfect Pass may or may not help, as they can be reset. I redid the dash and ran my new tach on a function generator for a couple weeks to get the correct hours on the hour meter before installing, mostly just to make maintenance easier.

                    Anyway, if you're worried about a GT40, you shouldn't be. Very durable engines. But if you are, do a compression test and make sure all the holes are close, then do a leakdown test. That will tell you all you need to know about the engine.

                    General boat condition will tell you far more.
