    GT-40 suddenly won't start-HELP

Yesterday we took the boat out and everything was running great. Started up with no problems at the launch. My wife and I took a set each wakeboarding. Then another friend put on the board and got in the water. All of a sudden the boat simply would not start. WE were getting power to the plugs, battery was good, most anything we could think of electrical was OK as well. WE suspect possible fuel problem in the filter or pump, or maybe a short or blown fuse in related hardware. Does anyone have any advice on what could cause such a sudden death to make the engine not start like that? If its something relatively simple I"d like to get it up and running this holiday wknd to take it back out on the water! Thanks for any help you can offer!

Spray some carb cleaner or starting fluid (or WD-40 if nothing else is around) in the carb (or air intake if you don't have a carb) and see if it'll fire. Apply liberally, but make sure to put the flame arrestor or whatever you took off, back on.

It's gotta be either fuel, air, or spark. You say you were getting spark, so that leave fuel or air.

    Good luck.

Make sure that when you turn the key on, you hear the fuel pump make a "noise"...If not, check your lanyard switch........then your fuel pump relays.........and the fuse coming from the battery. Easy places to start.

check your tether switch and make sure your throttle is in nuetral. Also, do you hear the fuel pump spool up when you turn the key? There is also a keep alive wire that could have a bad fuse. That is attached to your battery cable.

Thanks for the tips! Could someone point me in the right direction of finding where the fuel pump relays are located? I've been running through my engine and boat manuals and can't seem to locate that info! Thanks again!

is the motor cranking and not starting or is it dead not doing anything. is the starter turning the motor over? the lanyard is a great place to start they go out all the time also the starter solenoids go bad all the time. need a little better explnation of what boat is doing to be a better help.

                RE: GT-40 suddenly won

Yes the motor is turning over and engine cranking but its not starting up. Here is an update...my dad took the boat to a mechanic friend of his and they determined the fuel pump doesn't appear to be getting any voltage at all. So that is a good step in the right direction. What could be causing that? IS there a fuse panel or something like that in these boats? What should I look for now to see why its not getting any power? I think the relays are good they looked at them and they seem to be fine. Would the lanyard malfunctioning cut power to the fuel pump? I'll do some searches for the lanyard issue to see how to possibly test for and fix that.

                Thanks for all the help!

                  Yup, check the lanyard first.

If that checks out fine, go back to your relays. If your fuel pumps arent turning on, its most likely due to the pump itself, a bad relay, or a bad connection at the relay. Check to see if you have 12V at the relay first- but I bet you have a relay or a connection issue if you have no voltage to the pump.

Also check the fuse coming from the battery if you have one...........

Ok last word from my dad is they determined the fuel pump was getting NO power, and they traced it back to the relay. Swapped it with another relay and it cranked right up! Thanks for all the tips you guys were all over it And I'm glad I learned some more about my boat/engine in the process in case I need to know this stuff in the future.

Once again, another fuel pump relay. How many is that on this forum alone? Phantom, I went nuts finding the same problem. Tip: Swap out the ignition relay too. Mine was failing intermittently.

Looking at this picture which one is the fuel pump relay (right or left) on the GT-40? Mine is a 1998.

                            Thanks,
