GS22 Engine & Prop Upgrade

I’m planning on ordering a GS22 to replace my SAN 210.

I’d like to have a little more power for when fully loaded (pro ballast & 6 adults) but would also like a little bit higher cruising speed.

A few questions:
- If I get the ZZ6 engine and keep the stock prop, that would give me better performance when loaded but no change in speed.
- If I get the ZZ6 engine and a prop with slightly more pitch, would that give me a bit more power than the stock setup and also give me a bit more cruising speed?

Any thoughts or recommendations?

I doubt you'll find a prop that will give you more pulling power AND more top end.

Generally you get to add one of those at the expense of the other with a prop change.

I agree, if only changing the prop, you get one or the other.

If I upgrade from the ZR4 to the ZZ6, and also upgrade the prop, can I get both slightly more power and speed than the stock engine & prop setup?

Generally speaking, assuming you have the same prop with both engines, the bigger engine will give you more pulling power, but not top speed.

The prop will spin at the same max RPM, since it is the same prop attached to the same 1.48:1 transmission. 5,000 RPM is 5,000 RPM, whether you have a ZR4 or a ZZ6. Both engines should come stock with the Acme 1235 prop.

You may possibly be able to use a different prop for more top end with the ZZ6, but if so, you'll lose most if not all of the extra pulling power you got with the engine upgrade.

Correct, if I don’t change the prop then, for sure, there is no change in cruising speed - that is clear.
This is why I’m asking if anyone has experience with getting the more powerful engine plus changing to a prop with slightly more pitch, were they able to maintain or possibly slightly increase the power while also gaining a little bit of cruising speed?

Example: Using the GS22 with ZR4 engine and stock prop as the baseline for power and speed.
- If I upgrade to the ZZ6 I gain 50hp and 65lb-ft of torque. If I don’t change the prop I get much more power but same cruising speed
- If I also change the prop to the Acme 1941 (slightly more pitch) I will for sure increase the cruising speed but will also lose some power.

Has anyone tried this? I’m curious if I would still have equal or slightly more power compared to the fully stock setup? Also, any idea how much of an increase there would be in cruising speed? Would I gain 4-5 mph?

where are you located?
If you are at any elevation, the ZZ6 (H6) is a must.
I am at 6300ft, the H6 with the 1235 was fine in stock set-up and a 5-6 person crew. I did swap the pro ballast bags to wakemakers 800# bags (each). So i repropped to compensate. I don't remember exactly which prop is on there now, but we shot too low with the pitch. It is a 15x12. Boat only hits 36-37 mph. I am going to put a 2773 on for this year.
