1993 Ski Nautique Steering issue

The steering wheel is very difficult to turn both left and right. I think the cable may need to be replaced but I am not sure. Can anyone offer me any guidance on this. I think I can manage the replacement myself. Maybe a link to previous guidance offered or maybe a youtube video. Thanks in advance to anyone who would like to respond!

Replacing the steering cable is not difficult. It is just a matter of disconnecting the cable at the tiller arm, tying at strong cord to the end of the cable, disconnecting the rack at the helm and pull the cable though. Then tie the cord to the new cable and pull it back though from the helm. A second set of hands will make it go faster. Search "steering cable" in the search box and you will find a lot of information. Scroll down about 5 threads and you will see B-lake Wake. He did a video on changing the cable in his 1995 Super Sport about a month ago. His is a V-drive but the principle is the same. Your DD should be easier as long as you can get access to the tiller arm without removing the gas tank. I changed mine on my 1998 SN and it was simple. No need the remove the gas tank. Your 1993 may be different. Before you get involved with buying a new cable I would disconnect the cable at the tiller arm and turn the steering wheel to confirm the cable is the problem (which if it has never been changed is very likely the problem) and not the rudder. Assuming you confirm the cable is the issue you should also consider dropping the rudder, clean the rudder shaft and rudder port, repack and grease. One finger steering should be the end result.

You could do that, like my mechanic recently did when replacing my steering cable. But when he went to install the part he couldn’t get it to fit like the one he took out.

Turns out a previous owner/mechanic managed to install a 17’ cable in a boat that required the 19.5’. It was kind of tight, which is why I opted to do it, but now it’s smooth as butter. Night and day difference with the proper part.
