First time here. Need some help. I have a 1992 Ski Nautique with a PCM 5.8 Pro Boss HO. When warm pulling a skier up, it bogs down badly and only letting up on the throttle get is to smooth out. It also sometimes stalls when idling for more than 10 minutes then hard to start - feels and smells flooded. Generally runs rough when warmed up. Replaced fuel filter. Not sure what else to do.

Sure sounds like the carburetor needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Is this a ProTech engine? If you don’t know, do the spark plug wires run to a distributor at the front of the engine, or do they run to the rear of the engine to 4 rectangular black boxes above the bell housing? I believe ProTech was an option from 1989 to 1995 or 1996.

Any chance the carb was worked on recently? My BIL had a '93 Prostar with a 5.8 that behaved similarly when he bought it. After a few trips back to the dealer, they figured out that the rebuild kit used on the carb was wrong--something with a spring that wasn't allowing it to properly open up. Once they got that figured out, the thing ran like a top till he sold it last year.

MN Ryan,
Good call on the carb. Removed the engine cover and the spark arrester and watched the secondaries barely open when simulating pulling someone out of the hole. Secondaries barely opened. A buddy rebuilt the vacuum pump and it was much better. Still not perfect every time. Considering a lighter spring in the vacuum pump. All ideas are welcome.

Pull the carb a do a full rebuild. You'll be amazed. If you want to go with a new carb, the QuickFuel M-600 is an outstanding carb that is a direct replacement for your Holley 4160 (assuming that you have a Holley 4160).
