2007 SV-211 PCM 330 overheating first time out. New impeller. Ideas for cause?

Took my boat out of storage today for the first time and within 10 minutes of dropping it in the water it was overheating. I took it out of the water in a hurry as I wasn't sure where to start with troubleshooting. Some additional details:

• Replaced the impeller and raw water pump last year before taking to dealer for winterizing (never ran it after replacing the impeller/water pump)
• Had the dealer winterize it and put it away for storage
• It's a closed cooling system engine

Any idea on where to start troubleshooting?

Is the water inlet valve closed? Sometimes dealers do that when they winterize boats. If so, you'll need to replace the impeller again because running it like that for 10 minutes will have ruined the impeller.

Just to confirm, if the handles are in the open position, should they be running parallel with the hose? Because if so, they were.

I did just make another discovery however. I was looking at the inlet valves and there was a big o-ring laying right by the drain plug. Turns out it was the o-ring for the water strainer, which was missing when I took it off. also noticed a pocket of air in the water strainer. Would this have caused it to overheat so quickly?

Quite likely. Any air leak will cause issues.

Then the handle is set wrong on the valve. This goes back decades on pretty much anything that uses a ball valve. If the handle is in-line with the hose/pipe, the valve is OPEN.

That is the way it was from the factory . I believe they were removed turned 90 degrees and reinstalled but since I never close them I never bothered to change them . Make sure yours is open no matter where the handle is.

Quick update:

Spoke with the dealer and they took responsibility for forgetting to put the o-ring back on the water strainer, and said they would fix whatever damage came as a result. So far, I am pretty confident that the impeller is shot as the temperature exceeded 250 degrees.

After speaking with the dealer after last weeks incident, they told me to drop the boat back in the water to see if replacing the o-ring on the strainer fixed the issue. I took it back out and same thing. Overheated within less than 10 minutes of idling. I promptly turned the boat off when the engine alarm started going off and loaded it back on the trailer.

After loading the boat on the trailer and turning it off, it made a very strange noise. I can only describe it as a loud suction sounding noise. I'm not quite sure what it is, but I remember reading some horror stories about how an overheated engine can rotate in reverse after turning it off and suction water back up through the exhaust. How would I detect this?

Based on my research, there are a handful of issues this could have snowballed into assuming that the impeller is disintegrated:

• Broken thermostat (noticed that the gauge wasn't moving when I took it out this last time)
• Water pump damage
• Water in engine causing internal issues to block
• Exhaust piping collapsing due to reverse rotation of engine

Is there anything else that I should ask them to check?
