2009 SAN 210 - Won't start

Hi Everyone,

New owner of a new-to-me 2009 SAN 210. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction troubleshooting-wise.

Here's the story:

• Ran the boat for about 3-4 hours during a test drive - no issues
• Had the boat trailered to me from Indiana to Florida
• Stopped and started boat a few times to get off trailer, courtesy dock, etc. No issues
• Boat ran for about 20 minutes (about 5 minutes at no-wake speed)
• Passenger heard what they said was a high-pitched whine coming from engine compartment. Being a prior Moomba owner and not familiar with the sound of a Nautique (sometimes my Moomba fuel pump would whine), I turned off the boat to switch places so I could listen.
• I did notice that oil pressure seemed high, engine temp seemed normal.
• Pressed start, heard a click or clack, then nothing. Also, lost all power to helm (gauges, stereo, perfect pass)
• Checked all breakers (none popped)
• Turned battery switch off then on.
• Eventually, started getting power to helm (maybe 10 min later), but still no start but no click this time.
• Lights on keypad work
• Verified boat in neutral and safety lanyard on
• Had to get towed.

On trailer performed the following:

• Verifed oil level - oil level was high (i didn't notice this earlier)
• Checked starter fuse (okay)
• Checked all breakers (none popped)
• Replaced starter
• Replaced batteries (and cleaned connections)
• Attempted to start and got the same issue that occured on water; brief clicking noise, like from starter, then nothing and again all power to helm died.

I'm reasonably handy so hoping can identify the issue and resolve myself before defaulting to service department.

It could be that the battery cables are corroded internally. This happens to older Nautiques and gives the same symptoms. Are you in salt water by chance?

I did replace the starter without luck.

As no fresh water. The boat was originally in Indiana and I just brought it to FL and put it in fresh water here.

So to troubleshoot that theory run some jumper cables from the battery to the starter?

You could try that. Make sure the key (or keypad) is in the on position if you actually want the engine to start.

I second the wiring.. Also, be careful using the jumper cables and spark hazard, Should be fine, but I might put a small moving pad or something over the connections when cranking to keep open spark chance lower.. Just my .02. Wires can look good from the outside, but if they crackle or such when you try to bend them, they are toast and will lose ability to carry amperage. I have had this same thing happen and when I cut the cable a few inches back from the connector, the whole inside core was white and falling apart. This was a freshwater boat too. Thank you all for the advice. Excited to apply it and hopefully get out on the water. It may be Thursday or Friday before I can make an attempt and will respond back with the results.

How are the batteries ? Dead cell will do exactly what you describe.

Both batteries were old so I replaced them. Had same issue unfortunately. Click, no start, no power to helm. Gonna try bypassing the battery cables to see if corroded cables are the issue

Click and no start sounds like a selenoid to me, but I'm not sure that would cut power to the helm. The other thing that comes to mind is your battery selector switch. Perhaps going bad and was barely making connection, hence the click, and then going out completely? I have a friend who had one come completely apart on his 210. It doesn't explain the high pitched whine, but my guess is that is completely unrelated...

I replaced the starter with a brand new one so I’ve eliminated the solenoid. I was thinking about the batter selector as a culprit too. I might just replace that while I’m at it. Mine is in a black plastic housing with breakers for pumps, etc. the switch itself looks like stock Perko.

You wouldn’t happen to know the Perko model # for that part?

Mine has a Blue Sea Systems switch (Selector 6007) rather than a Perko, so not sure about the Perko number. You could check it with a multi-meter to see of you have 12V+ on both sides of the switch when "on".
