    Oil Filter Leak

Hey Forum Members, I am very frustrated and need any advise you may have. I just completed my first 25 hour oil change on my G23 and i noticed oil at the lip of the screw on filter. I did tighten it rather tight and thought that that could be the issue so I replace the oil filter with the same exact type (both were OEM pleasure craft filters). The second one leaked as well but to a less degree. Running for about 1 hour the lip fills with oil but does not really drip down the filter like the first one did. I wipe it dry and with a fem minutes the oil is back. I assume if I left it alone it would begin to drip down the filter. So I installed a third filter and this time a Fram XG8A. I cleaned the area real well and lubricated the gasket and the seating surface and hand tightened it snuggly. Again within minutes the filter lip fills with oil.

I have changed oil in cars for 40 years and never had a filter leak after just a hand tightening. Only thing I can think of is that the mating surface on the block where the filter screws into is slightly warped. But I would be surprised since this is a new boat. I did not notice any oil on the filter when I removed the factory one.

I know I can have the boat dealer look at this but they are backed up 6 weeks and its in the middle of the summer and I do not want to miss this lake time.

    Any Advise is Appreciated.

Sound like you’re doing everything right. Manufacturing defects happen. Something like that is more likely to be warped day 1 than develop over time. Where’s the filter on your engine? If it’s a remote mount it’s pretty easy to replace.

Yes it’s a remote mount. So it can be replaced. I tightened it more and will see tomorrow if it’s better otherwise I’ll live with it till the dealer mechanic can come out. My boat is on a lift at lake Travis without a trailer so I’m at there mercy.

Is the filter housing double gasketed?

OK, so I had the same problem with my 2019 SANTE 230. The lip on the filter would always fill with oil. After the 3rd oil change, I decided to figure out what was going on.

I took a mechanics mirror and looked at the sealing surface of the remote filter mount. It turned out that it had a drip of black paint on it that had dried and that created an uneven sealing surface. All I had to do was scrape it off with a blade and that solved the problem.

Thanks Charles. Sounds like that could be my issue, I’ll check. Did you notice oil from the factory installed
oil or only once you chance it?

The factory filter was on ridiculously tight but it still had a small amount of oil seeping.

Maybe captain obvious here...but make sure the flat circular filter seal actually came off with with the old filter and did not remain stuck to the housing. If this occurs, you have an extra seal mucking up the connection.
