I wish to replace my 1991 steering cable.

The existing Morse cable is red with white letters and numbers on it. It appears to be: MORSE D304411-234 IN 50361
I believe this is a rotary style. I was told that I would need to have a new helm and the new style cable. I should see if mine screws in or is a "Push In" type. How do I do that? Do I simply take the plate off shown in the picture with the little what sticker on it? Is it possible to find a direct replacement cable. I see one on line, but the serial number begins with an "E" instead of a "D" like mine. Are there instructions to actually pull the old out and install the new one? Is there a trick to working with the steering wheel when removing and replacing? Thanks for any comments.

I would replace that outdated helm. You'll like the rack and pinion style a lot better.

I doubt you can find a direct replacement for that old cable. As Jeff recommended, upgrade the helm and cable together. Mucho más bueno.

I was wondering why the steering seam effortless when on the trailer out of water, but in the lake it's super stiff. Why? Does this make sense?

The steering wheel turns with ease while on the trailer but in the water at low speeds - it's very stiff.

I am looking for some comments before I put in the new cable. Maybe my old cable is fine and its something else causing the stiff steering at low speeds in the water. Anyone know if this is common?

On the trailer it has no load (water resistance). Once it is in the water, it has a load on the rudder.

Did you drop the rudder, clean, grease and check tiller arm and packing?

Thanks. I will check and drop the rudder and clean. It just seams strange that the resistance is very low until it gets in the water. How much play should be in the rudder if when on the trailer, I grab it and try to move it?
