2017 g23 starting issue

Having starting issues with 2017 g23 zz6.

I assume there is a starter contact issue on the keypad

- when powering up the boat electrically (blower) the start button works every time .

- when pushing the start button it takes 15-20 pushes and some
luck to get it started (engine on). Engine cranks right away and starts as soon as you get lucky.

- boat has also randomly shut down the engine 2 times in the last 3 weeks while pulling a surfer. Electrical stayed all on , just engine completely died. Pushed the start button and engine fired right up.

Why would the keypad start button work to power up the boat , but have issues getting it started ? Any ideas where to look?

Do you turn your batteries completely off every time you put the boat away after use?

You might not be waiting long enough in between when you turn them back to on then enter the code to start. Turn batteries on then wait at least 20 seconds before entering the code.

If not that the could need a new key pad or loose connection on the back of the pad. Easy enough to check/replace.

The owners manual for my 2019 says to wait 30 seconds after turning battery on before I enter the code.

My 2014 says the same. There are some components (ECU and keypad, perhaps?) silently powering up and running self tests during the first little bit after 12v is applied. Make the battery switch the very first thing you do when you get to the boat. Then load your crew and gear before you put in your code to see if that alleviates the issue.

Yes 10 seconds isn’t long enough wait longer. I always wait 20secs at least and it seems to always be ok. But try the 30secs it says in the manual and see if that helps the issue.

That’s the easy try first, then I’d be looking at new key pad or the connection on the back of it. It’s a multi wire plug so could be one connection not making properly.

Don’t think it’s the batteries , it doesn’t even attempt to turnover . But when you get lucky it starts like it’s new.

Originally thought it was the tether as first time it just died while surfing . But tether is on properly.

I’ve noticed when batter(ies) are low or are old and don’t hold a charge as well the push button to start will not respond or be really delayed, exactly as you are stating. It seems likely a computer decision saying voltage is lower than it needs to start.

Next time it happens look at the voltage if it’s sitting lower than normal at rest (for me 13+ V at rest it doesn’t happen), but if less than 13 at rest it starts to happen, and down to 12.3 or less it will likely happen.

anyone know if there’s a minimum voltage for the start button to engage the starter ? If so the V?

Did you ever end up getting this issue sorted? I have the exact same problem going on. Boat has died randomly a handful of times over the last 2 years - screen stays on when this happens. Also has a random no start issue that is the same as yours. I have new batteries, connections/main grounds are all good and when it does start it starts fine.

issue is intermittent so it is hard to diagnose when al is working fine.

Just a couple of cents on a revived thread that died in '21. I love these "Hey I need help", but I'm not going to let you know what I did to fix it threads.
We were having random intermittent no starts, and stalls earlier this season, maybe it started last season, all a blur.
I replaced the throttle base assembly, and not a single issue since then (knock on wood). FWIW
