Does it sound like it’s coming from the bell housing area? If so, it may be a damper plate.

IDK typically a damper will rattle in neutral and clang or crunch in gear. Did you look at your trans oil? What's that looking like?

Agree about trying to isolate where the noise is coming from. From the video it sounds like the trans but how do you really tell from a video.

im assuming trans because it only happens when its in gear - forward or reverse.... fluid clean

So the BIL is going through a similar problem believe it or not. Wish I could cut the video out of the txt message. His ended up being the coupler in the trans. He thinks he hit a log about a year ago. He fixed the prop and has put about 50 hours on it since. Apparently the strut was slightly bent, the strut bearing is worn out, the shaft is slightly bent and all this caused the splines on the shaft to where out in the coupler but it's a different set up than yours.

Doesn't really sound like a bearing to me...has more of 'lash' sound suggesting it's maybe band or pump related. Still..it's not right.

If it was mine, first thing I'd do would be be swap in new fluid. Next, I'd disconnect the coupler and repeat the test. You can tell much better where the sound is..but by connecting the coupler you might be able to confirm it's not strut related.

It's not hard to pull the trans and bench it for a shop.

disconnected the coupler, the noise just about disappeared in forward, and much quieter in reverse. My stethoscope make me thing clutch plate rattle, maybe because of no load? I do think that the strut bearing needs replacing as its probably original (2001 - unknown hours) and there seems to be some play in there, not much but some. Since ill be taking out the tank to do the carpet (and drop rudder), might as well....

got a sachs plate, glide bushings, packing, puller, etc, on the way... gonna refresh the whole drive line because i believe all this is original (20yrs old). Q: with the trans and bell housing out for drive plate replacement - will i have to pull the coupler or will the shaft pull far enough forward?

Since you're going this deep you may want to pull the shaft anyway and have a machine shop check the run out on the shaft. The strut bearing I've seen that have gone bad ended up being part of the symptom of a greater issue like a bent strut, bend shaft or someone running an out of balance prop for an extended period of time. Or like one of the boats I was looking at to flip, all three. Doesn't take a lot over time to wear things out.

trans is out - had to drill the bell housing, drive plate frozen to trans shaft, no busted springs but rusted up solid. dumped the fluid, looks dirty and a bit copper sparkly. now the decision to open the trans or not.... im 99% sure i could do myself. would love to clean it out and put in a new set of clutches, and see what else....

Metal in the fluid is never a good thing. As for rebuilding yourself.... Depends on how comfortable you are with that type of thing. I've read a couple threads on the OTHER ski boat thread like this great step by step thread on a 71C.....

                        https://teamtalk.mastercraft.com/sho...=53874&t=53874

And here's a great video on rebuilding a PCM 40i.....

                        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zybPkIhVIMk

The toughest part appears to be the snap rings but that would be me just looking and not doing the rebuild myself. And I always hate when the disassembly requires some special tool.

Fantastic Finish marine can supply friction plates - not steels.... good think i dont think i need steels

Is it possible to replace the damper plate without pulling the engine? I noticed mine does rattle when not in the water (maybe becuase it isnt under any resistance) but in the water it does not. However, I noticed today at high speed (40mph) I was getting a loud rattling noise in the back every so often (not constant) but needed a 2nd set of ears to listen to it.
