13 G23 Electronic issues

Hey Guys,

I recently picked up a 13 G23 with 500 hours on it, so I’m new to the forum. I know there have been a lot of screen issue talk on here as i have read most of them. I’ve had a few problems lately with the screen having issues, but I want to see if there is any connection between the screen and some of the other electronic issues that popped up the same time the screen went out.

About a month ago I had the screen doing some rolling blackout while also grey or whatever. After a few days sitting I went back to the boat and it has been fine ever since.

Yesterday leaving party cove (sober) it went completely black on me. I shut the boat down and Reset it with the battery selector and it worked for 10 more mins before going out again. Last night i pulled the battery terminals and let it sit overnight. Since then I have had zero luck getting anything out of it. I have checked fuses, looked in the engine compartment for any obvious damage, looked in the panel to reset breakers and so on.

Here is what I do know/have checked so far:

-The engine still runs with no problems.
-The bilge horn and blower seem to be working
-Stereo does not work
-Stern light does not come on at all
-Bow lights are flashing consistently when turned on
-I have looked for broken, burnt and loose wires with no luck.
-I have pulled the screen out and all of the connections seem to be ok

I appreciate any info as this is my last effort before taking it in to the shop. I was hoping to get 2 more months of boating in Austin before winter, but I have a feeling the season may be close to over depending on the dealership lead time.

What is the accessory led doing? The small blue one next to the stop button? If it’s blinking the pwm is in protective mode and there is another system shorted out.

The only thing I’ve seen blinking is the bilge pump and the bow nav lights.

It sorta sounds like the battery or batteries are dying. How are you using the battery selector? When did the previous owner last replace them? What do they show if you put a multimeter on them?

No there are small blue led right next to the start and stop button. They will be solid on normal operation with the ignition engaged. If there is a fault the one to the right of the start button will flash. Not the bilge pump.

It sorta sounds like the battery or batteries are dying. How are you using the battery selector? When did the previous owner last replace them? What do they show if you put a multimeter on them?

Double up- the batteries were my initial thought as well. They both have 11/18 stckers on them, so i assume they are due for replacement anyway. I may start with that just because. I put a meter on the yesterday and they were both around 13.1-2v when running. 12.7 when off. I generally start with battery two and then select both once I’m going to try to keep them both powered. I’m not sure if that is correct, but the screen has only ever went blank when selecting both to start in the past.

nohlan- the lights are both on, but much more dim than usual.

I would not switch batteries in the switch while under way, you can cause electrical issues that way. If the light isn’t blinking then it should be ok no faults. You might have a voltage issue but 12.7 isn’t bad at rest with no charge on it.

I think i read that the battery switches are : Make-Before-Break (MBB) is a term “Denoting a switch or other device in which a new electrical connection is made before the existing one is broken”. In short, it simply means, shorting the circuit before disconnecting it.

So you ok to switch from/to any of the on positions. But you don't want to turn it off while boat is running.

Also, that being said, I would just put on both (1+2) and leave it there unless sitting with boat off listening to music, and then just move to either one or two. Leaving the other one isolated for boat restart. This way you are using both to start and topping off both all the time while running.

The way these switches fall apart I'd prefer to be safe and turn the boat off before switching if that's an option.

Whether it is or not in the manual it states to not do that. And like stated I wouldn’t want to test it when it’s not necessary. When starting and under way I always just leave it on both for obvious reasons.
