2006 SANTE PCM 5.7 343 Impeller walk through - please help tweak process

    * before you begin be sure to remove the driver side black partitions with the top rail and the pieces below to get access to the side of the engine. It’s a hassle but a must. I took a white grease pencil to mark my partition boards front back etc. so I can figure out which way they go back together lol

    1. Unbolt drivers side exhaust riser - 4 bolts

    2. Loosen 2 hose clamps at muffler

    3. Twist and remove drivers exhaust off muffler w exhaust riser attached

4.15 mm and a breaker bar to loosen and remove serpentine belt

4b. Remove the hose clamps and the two black waterlines from the top of the water pump

    5. Push back muffler and wedge a 2x4 between the red water pump and muffler to give yourself a little room to work on the pillar bolts.

    6. 10 mm socket and a short extension to remove the three impeller bolts behind the pulley

    7. Slide the impeller pump housing off the shaft and remove in the boat

    8. Swap out the O-rings on each of the bolts and replace the O-ring seal that sits in the pump housing!!

9 remove the old impeller from the engine housing by twisting it a little and pulling it out with needle nose.

    10. Work the new impeller into the pump housing on the engine by twisting it and working it in by pressing in to get it seated

    11. With the new O-ring seals on the bolts twist the pulley as you seat the assembly back together on the engine get it pretty close and then you can finger start a 10 mm bolts on the pump housing

    12. Tighten the bolts back down with either a flexible extension or a short extension and torque the 3 10mm bolts to 9 pounds each

    13. Remove the piece of wood wedged between the muffler and water pump, reinstall the serpentine belt, reinstall the exhaust.

You may need to have a new exhaust riser gasket to install if your old one is cracked and crumbling. Torque before exhaust riser bolts to 15 foot pounds and finish at 25 foot pounds after you’ve been able to run the boat for a few minutes

It seems a little goofy to have to move the exhaust on one side. But that’s the only way I found to get any room to work on the impeller housing. people say I should be able to slide it off with the exhaust doesn’t seem to ever want to come off the riser so it’s easier just take the riser off with the four bolts to work

Holly cow, you have to be kidding me. You have to take the exhaust riser and hose off to get to the impeller? That's absolutely nuts and takes the award for incredibly stupid engineering if that's the case. It would be nice to see some pictures of this mess.

Mine is fairly simple to get to and easier to do than the Ilmor's I have primarily worked on. To date the Ilmor pump set up on the MC I help out with has been the record holder for stupid engineering as most will tell you to pull the pump (located at the bottom of the engine and at the rear with a vdrive) to replace the impeller but having to pull the riser to get to the pump would certainly take stupid engineering to a new level. Especially since this is supposed to be a serviceable part.

Reminds me a lot of the cars that you had to remove the engine to replace the spark plugs but at least with those it only had to be done every 100K.

Agreed. Do you REALLY have to remove the entire riser to get to the raw water pump? I've replaced a LOT of impellers on a lot of different Nautiques over the years and never had to remove an exhaust riser. That said, I'm pa pretty slim guy and can get into tight spaces fairly easily. Maybe that's the difference here.

There is maybe 1” space from the impeller pulley and the muffler housing. It’s so tight that something needs to be moved.

Or maybe my exhaust baffles need to be a few inches longer?

OK. If you take the pulley off the pump first will that give you enough clearance to remove the impeller? You really don't want to be removing the exhaust riser every time.

Agree with Charles on this. I'd be tempted to break loose the hex screws attaching the pulley loose, remove the belt next, then the pulley. Still crazy and as hard as it is to believe worse than the Ilmor which is a real accomplishment.

Do you have room to somehow move the muffler back further by extending the riser hoses? You'd only really need about 2" or so more, right?
