NEMA integration for boats with Failed Gateways - another option

Has anyone retro fit a NEMA backbone system into the mid to late 2000 era boats with the failing gateways? Currently there only seems to be one option and that is to spend $1000 on the gauge conversion kit (which many feel the gauges are a terrible fit) plus labor to install (total of around $1500 or more).
I am investigating the possibility of a aftermarket NEMA based gateway that plugs into the diagnostic port and can transmit all the data you could want, to a multi function gauge or display. The NEMA system could also be used for lighting control as well. I had a lightning strike on my property that unfortunately went through my Battery maintainer and fried everything in my boat. Almost all audio, underwater lights, ECU and some wiring, Gateway and gauges. Insurance is depreciating by 1/3 which sucks but whatever.
I just figure I might as well look at the newest tech to upgrade while I can, and the NEMA based gateway with a display or gauge will be cheaper and may work better with less footprint. You can plug multiple NEMA compatible things into the single NEMA cable and it handles it all, like a Cat6 cable (sort of), sending a receiving data. I know Shadowcaster just came out with a lighting commander that is NEMA and they have a wet sounds head unit that incorporates their control as well. If anyone has any suggestions post em up. Other wise, If I go this route I will try and post an update or project photos when done. Still going back and forth with insurance but hopefully can get the shop started soon.
2008 SAN 230 with 1160 hrs (gauge won't read past 999.9 due to gateway) and now I'ts toast from the strike.
    Cheers.

While I hope my Gateway lives on forever, I'll be interested in whatever you come up with!

Mine is just starting to give me problems, fuel gauge stopped last year, this year oil pressure, battery gauges stopped.... luckily the digital side on things is still reading signal. I am interested to see what you come up with. Good luck! 06 SV211

I saw a video on this the other day but can't seem to find it again. The one I saw a guy was converting all his gauges in his I/O boat from his dash to a Garmin chart plotter of some sort. The key in that video was a converter box that plugged into the ECM from a company called Fox.....

It worked well but the guy really needed to think out how the display was going to be laid out better. The issue I saw was he was either on the Chart Plotter or gauges panel. I'd really like to know more about this is you decided to dig deeper.
