2008-2009 Gauge Issue (Anyone have a good tachometer?)

Backstory: I have a 2009 SAN TE with ZeroOff and the “updated” Faria Gateway box. Updated meaning the gateway does not have the pitot tubes for the speedometer signal. Toward the end of the summer, my tachometer (which includes hour meter), oil pressure, engine temperature, and ZeroOff stopped working. The boat runs and operates normally but it’s less than ideal not having ZeroOff and not being able to monitor my engine vitals. So, I went down the rabbit hole of troubleshooting the issue. I verified that I was getting 12V to the gateway. I’m getting continuity through the CAN-BUS cable from the ECU to the Gateway that carries the J1939 data from the ECU.
Long story, short. I ended up ordering a new Gateway Box from NautiqueParts.com for $952. This is a non-refundable part but troubleshooting, conversations with Faria and Nautique, and forum threads pointer to a high likelihood of it being the problem. I installed the new Gateway to find that it did not fix my problem. Now, I’m out $952. I have a spare Gateway, Model GW0021, that I’d part with for a discounted price if anyone needs one.
I believe I have two potential issues that could be my problem: a bad tachometer or an ECU that’s working but not sending the J1939 data. Here are a few questions I have:

1. Can the ECU work properly but not send the J1939 data to the Gateway? I don’t know the answer to that.
2. Can a bad tachometer cause the other gauges to not work? It seems like it could due to the fact they are wired in series. Would that also cause ZeroOff to not work?

Does anyone have a known “good” tachometer for a 2008-2009 SAN that I could plug into my boat to see if that’s the fix?
Any help that anyone could offer would be much appreciated. I’m already $952 in the hole. A new ECU is $1200. You can’t even get new tachometers anymore. I’m trying to figure out the fix before just throwing more money at hit on parts I can’t return.

I am sure you looked into it, but i am curious. Faria no longer tests and repairs their gauges? Not so long ago they used to. Furthermore, they mfg the gateway. Would they test?

You say the guages are wired in series. But isn't that just how they get power. They each get their own signal from the gateway box don't they?

Nope. Gauges are all in series, data and power.

I have seen bad gauges cause issues down the serial line. Try taking the tach completely out of the series. Connect all of the other gauges together and see if the ZO starts working.

Thanks for the input. Taking the tach out of the series was a suggestion my local Nautique dealer had. My boat is at our family lake house and I havenā€™t had a chance to get down there in the past couple of weeks. I hope to get down next weekend. I’ll try it then.

Ah another Gateway problem... I truly feel for you. I ran into this a couple years ago when my hour meter stopped at 999.9..... Both Nautique and Faria pointed fingers at each other so no telling whose to blame. I got to higher levels in both companies and was not able to get a new updated gateway, even if I paid (not sure how you were able to). I even said I would pay Faria to fix my gateway and they said Nautique would not allow them to work on them, so there we are...
The 'fix' they said was to wire a cheap hour meter up somewhere, awesome. For those who have gauges that don't work you are stuck with the analog update kit for crazy money, and the gauges have much to be desired - not matching at all.
I recently had a direct lightning strike on my property and unfortunately lost some decking, outlets, multiple electronics in my house, dock, and boat (was connected to a quality battery maintainer but that didn't stop the damage.) Took out my gateway, ECU, audio, underwater lighting, some wiring and fuse block. Boat Insurance depreciated it by a 3rd due to being over 10 years old. That coupled with the deductible makes it hurt.
I am going to be installing a aftermarket marine Gateway soon, which will run NMEA signal to a Multi-function display. This will display more data than needed and I can also control my underwater lights and audio through the MFD as well. I will try and do a project on here when I get it done... Best of luck... I sent my ECU to the aftermarket gateway company so they can make the proper gateway to work with my PCM engine and convert the data signal. And these gateways are a much more economical way to go.

On my old 2006 196 I tried disconnecting the tach gauge to get rid of an annoying false low pressure alarm I would get when I stopped the boat. When I disconnected the tach gauge, that disabled all of the gauges. The nature of the “serial bus cable” is it depends on all of the gauges being plugged in order to work. Surprised you were able to buy a replacement gateway versus the gateway bypass kit available on Nautique parts.
