Every time I think about replacing the FCC internal filter I get hives; my FCC canister screws on. I tried every trick, magic tool, ju-ju dance, anti seize ointment, etc. and each year I wanna throw it as far as I can! Then one day, I was at my Nautique dealer drooling over a navy blue 200 and I saw the new style FCC with a clamp - what! So, as part of the fuel system update, I decided to bite the bullet and replace the FCC with the clamp style. I ordered it from NP (SKIDIM didn't have just the FCC). When it arrived, it wasn't what I thought I ordered. Sure, the FCC canister uses a clamp, but what I didn't expect is it's the newer integrated side mounted low pressure fuel pump style. At first I was excited, but that introduces more variables now :-( For instance, I've read PCM/CC started installing a pre-filter to protect the low pressure pump. It makes total sense, my 1999 didn't include it and possibly why my low pressure fuel pump failed.
This is where I get confused. What pre-filter setup do I use? What are the specs of this side mounted fuel pump? Fuel flow rates? GPH? Since it draws fuel from the tank, how much pre-filter can I use, 20 micron, 40, 100, a fuel screen? Too much filter will cause the pump to work harder, effecting reliability and flow rates and too little filter can damage the pump.
I see basically two kinds of pre-filters, some time between 2007 and 2011, PCM/CC use a NAPA Gold filter. The part number refers to 40 microns. After 2011, PCM/CC use a Sierra 20 micron fuel water separator unit that has a bunch of surface area (much more than the NAPA filter) which keeps flow rates in check.
I want to add a pre-filter, it makes sense. What do I do? Does any one know who makes the low pressure fuel pump on the newer side mounted FCC units?
