A "Heads" up to anyone needing a replacement GT 40 head. After I found out I had a cracked head on my 99 SAN...due to a previous overheat, I needed a replacement. Turns out you can get one off the 96 to 98 Ford explorer 5.0 litre, early Mustang Cobra's and the F150 Lightning 5.8 litre My machine shop rebuilt the head using my old valve springs and he marinized it with bronze freeze plugs, total cost was less than $300.00

RE: GT 40 cylinder head
Not quite. The early (~93ish) Cobra and Lightning both had the GT40 heads. However, the 97+ explorers/mountaineers with the 302 had GT40p heads. GT40's and GT40p's are quite different (combustion chamber size, spark plug angle), plus the p's flow better. I dont think you want to mix and match them.1990 Ski Nautique

Umm, well, my GT head came off a 97 mountaneer so maybe it changed mid year...whatever...just make sure the head is stamped GT not GTP. There are 4 bars embossed on the end of the GTP head, the GT only has 3. Pretty tough to mix up with all the GT markings on the head.Should have pulled the boat out sooner

does this give more clearness
does this give more clearness
found it through "FordMuscle"
I have read a lot fairytale storys about it
I have looked in my boat, as far as it looks the p's should also fit concerning interference exh-manifold and plugs.
Can anyone confirm the p's will not fit, and why.

The GT40p's fit our boats just fine- the different spark plug angle actually makes it a little easier to swap plugs.
