    2018 GS22 Depth Finder Issues

Just purchased the boat. Depth finder works very intermittently. Can be working just fine and then switches to read 0.0. When I do get readings they appear to be accurate. The issue is I am only getting readings part of the time. Depth does not seem to matter as it can show me readings at depths of 40 feet or more and speed also does not matter as it can work properly on plane or at idle speed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx in advance.

Can you related the issue to any kind of vibration or shock like hitting a wave or rocking of the boat? I'd like to think it's a loose wire or connection.

Boats take a pounding and it's not unusual for things to come loose or rub through something over time. As such the low hanging fruit is always going to be to look for loose connections, bad grounds or damaged wiring. I always like to "nut and bolt" as much of a new/new to me boat before commissioning it for the season whenever possible. This also gives me time to get acquainted to the boat and take pictures of any areas that I'll need to be familiar with during the season like circuit breaker locations and such. This also is part of my winterization process or whenever I working on any part of the boat. I'm constantly looking for anything that doesn't quite look right, is loose or out of place.

In this case I would try to trace the signal wire from the transducer and ensure it hasn't been damaged and is connected properly. From there I would be looking closely at the battery terminals and trace those to the power panel looking for any loose/dirty or damaged connections. Past these actions you're pretty much looking at replacing a transducer, then its off to the control module. If it were me I'd make darn sure all that wiring was right first.

Thanks bturner. I have not noticed anything related to shock. It works at high speed and also at idle and also does not work in those same conditions. I will start with the wiring from the transducer. Boat has 115 hours on it…..and is in awesome condition.

Were you ever able to resolve this?

We have a 2020 GS22 and our depth gauge has just failed as well. It reads 0.0 all the time. The local dealer where we purchased it dropped the brand to focus on fishing boats, and now the closest dealer is 3+ hours away. I'm hoping to resolve this on our own even though it's still under warranty so I don't have to trailer it so far away.

        Thanks in advance!

The Airmar depth / temp sensors tend to fail as described in the original post. They start reading 0.0 intermittently and then typically just quit all together. Are you getting zero for both depth and water temp, if so then that's certainly the cause? This is probably the right one but check part numbers off your old one or call NautiqueParts before ordering. You may want to contact NautiqueParts regardless, because since it's under warranty you may be able to work out getting the part via warranty. A lot of dealers will let you pay for the part, but then refund the money when they get the old part back for the warranty claims. The kit below comes with the part that mounts through the hull, but you won't actually need any of that. The sensor itself has a retainer ring that unscrews then it slides out of the through hull fitting. Slide the new one in, tighten the retainer ring, and plug it in to the wiring harness. It's very easy to change.

It's also possible to buy the part directly from Airmar for cheaper, but it's really pretty difficult to figure out the right cross reference number. The parts sold via Nautique have different part numbers than parts bought directly from Airmar. And there are a lot of different models because the sensors have to match the angle of the hull.

Wow, thank you jpwhit for the very helpful reply.

I am almost positive that the water temp is still reading OK but I will double-check. The depth gauge stopped working about two weeks ago; we've since been out multiple times and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if there were issues with the temp readings as we usually have those in our main view.

I had some unexpected occurrences and sadly we were not able to use our boat again until today. As it turns out, jpwhit was on target, and our water temperature reading is also not working.

Our next step will be to try and trace the wire. We've never removed the floor board from our boat. If we do so is that where we'll be able to see the transducer and follow the cable from there?

              I greatly appreciate the advice!

Where does the transducer plug into? I e got a 2010 super air 230 and am having the same issue. I ordered a new transducer but can't find where it plugs into I see the dash.
