    Random engine shut-off - 2020 G21 with the ZZ6

Hey all. Last weekend, mid-day after surfing for several hours, the engine shut down mid surf. Electronics stayed on, the engine just died. Luckily I didn't ram the transom, and boat restarted right away. Just a random shut down. No codes on the Linc diagnostic page. Been fine since. I'm probably about 10 hours after a dealer-performed 300-hour service and oil change. Strange thing is, my previous 2018 with the H6 did this randomly on 3 separate occasions.

Anyone have any ideas? I've think I've seen a previous post or two where issues like this were written off as a 'hiccup' or similar. I get that, but if this happened to my truck randomly while driving it'd be a major issue. Any and all input appreciated.

    Thanks!

I had a very similar occurrence with my G21 2019 on several occasions until I got stranded about 3 weeks ago and ran the batteries down trying to crank. The dealer diagnosed a wiring problem and PCM provided replacement wiring. There was a comment about delay due to 130 other boats having this wiring issue? Is there a recall or notice about this? Dunno. I will be picking it up tomorrow so I will see if this fixes it. Very concerning when it happened and I would describe it as very similar to a sticky post about Excalibur fuel system thread?

Would love to know if others have experience with this issue?

Anytime I've had a random shutdown, I've always been able to trace it to a fixable problem. IMO it's unacceptable to have a boat that you can't count on.

bblair and jpwhit - thanks for your responses. Totally agreed, there needs to be a determinable cause and a fixable solution. Have spoken to the dealer, they're researching on their end. Will update when I get a response. Interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar issue. Thanks!

@BasaltRMK did you get any feedback from the dealer?

HydroAggie - I apologize for not following up on this issue and closing the loop. Unfortunately, the dealer was never able to diagnose the issue, nor could they replicate it. Thankfully, the issue has not recurred. Unlike the recurring issue with the 2018 H6 (which likewise was never diagnosed), this ZZ-6 has been bulletproof (knocking on wood an crossing fingers/toes). 430+ hours and counting.

Now, if I could only resolve the ongoing transmission / v-drive issue...

I take it you've run into a similar issue?

For what it is worth, we were having random start problems a few weeks back. I had forgotten the part about where the engine would just kill mid-stream, it was a wait, did that just happen? Happened a couple times. I ran a fix and we have not had a single issue since, 9 lake run's this season and counting. We might be buying time but I'm not busting open wrapped wire looms if I don't have to.
Might be along similar lines of experiences here, may be something totally different:

Hey All! I am new to this forum, but having the exact issue as previously posted.
I was surfing behind our 2019 GS22 with about 275hrs on it the other day, suddenly I literally dove off the board as I nearly hit the back of the boat. My family said the boat just quit. Hmmmm. A day later while just cruising up the lake it did the same thing again. The only other issue lately is it seems like the Start button needs to be pushed two or three times before it’ll crank and fire up.
Looking for some advice on what we should be doing as it was a bit concerning to nearly slam into the back of the boat when surfing. Please help! Thanks in advance.

I know this is an older post, but wondering if anyone has any recent troubleshooting / root cause feedback to provide to the group?
We just experienced a random engine shut-off while surfing in our 2016 G23.

I posted a discussion topic about this a few weeks ago.

                  Thanks!

I just experience the random shut-down on my G21 ZR4 (no fun)... are there any updates that can be provided on the issues discussed on this thread?? My situation mimics Lwattie's experience.

Unfortunately nothing on my end. Issue was never diagnosed, but thankfully never recurred.

I know this falls in the Redneck Arena, bbuuut, haven't had a problem since the advent of cable ties, for what's it's worth. Maybe I just got lucky, maybe...
Worth a shot, no harm, no foul.

We had this happen 3 times last year. Dealer ended up replacing the touch pad control panel. That fixed ours (20 G23)
