Hi guys! I am a new boat owner and we got a 2001 Sport Nautique. Pardon me if this is a dumb question, but it says it holds 30 gallons, and when we fill it up at a quarter tank left, we can only add in maybe 9 or 10 gallons before it overfills. Any other experience with this or ideas on how to get a better read on how much gas we have (aside from just opening to look at the tank, which we can do!)? The speedometer also seems to read fine and then suddenly fluctuate down to zero and then pop back up. Thanks, all!

Check for a bent sending unit, or possibly a stuck float or failing float. The sending units are fairly easy to replace as long as you can get to the top of the tank without removing it.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. +1. The fuel tank sending unit is wonky. Not too difficult to change. Make sure you get the reed switch type sending unit and not the “swing arm” type. You also need to match up the sending unit output (in Ohms) with the gauge. USA is usually 240 Ohms at empty and 33 Ohms at full. European standard is 180 Ohms at full and 0 Ohms at empty. The length is also important. The tube should be 1” off the bottom of the tank when installed.

If it's not the sending unit, then it may be a clogged fuel tank breather hose or hull fitting. That will make the tank overflow when you try to fill it because air pressure can't escape from the tank. If this is the problem, you can often add more gas if you do it very slowly.Comment
