Alternator Upgrade for a 94 Sport w/Pro Boss

Hi

94 Sport with a 5.8 Pro-Boss EFI.

Any recommendations for an alternator upgrade? I know some of you have purchased some very very nice units. I am looking for something that gives the best cost/benefit and ease of installation. I am running quite a bit of juice with 3 amps, 4 55w lights up top (Which do get used), ballast pumps, etc. Thinking around 80amps? Maybe 100amps.

Should I investigate rebuilding the stock alternator? Is it possible to increase it to 80amps?

I know I will need to replace the main wire running from the alternator to the battery. Anything else to keep in mind? I am currently showing 13.5 volts on the back of the alternator with the engine running. It does not flux when reving in neutral. I am hoping the new alternator will give me 14.4v right? I am also hoping the new alternator will charge batteries faster and will be able to help handle the voltage drops caused by the stereo (Also installing a 1 farad capacitor to help with this)

How long should it take a qualified mechanic to replace the alternator?

The kit # is RF097009A.
1. DISCONNECT BATT.
2. REMOVE EXISTING ALT.
3. REMOVE ORANGE WIRE FROM 60 AMP BREAKER.
4. REMOVE AND REPLACE V-BELT PULLEY(SUPPLIED)
5. INSTALL NEW GROUND WIRE TO ALT.(SUPPLIED)
6. INSTALL NEW POS. CABLE TO ALT(SUPPLIED)
7. SPLICE GREEN WIRE INTO ALT PIGTAIL.
8. MOUNT ALT USING EXISTING BRACKET.
DONE.

This is the diluted version of the instructions that came with the kit, but that is about all thats involved...pretty simple. It took about 2 hours with the perko install. The kit come with a diagram as well. Brice and Mark were both a lot of help at WCCC.

I do believe this kit will work. Your dealer will know for sure. The alternator currently being installed on new PCM engines is this same 100 amp unit, so I don't know why it wouldn't work.

I've done that upgrade on my '94. I love it. Installation in about 3/4 of an hour. I'm only running 2 amps and heater, but I cant get the volt meter to drop.

I also did the PCM 100 amp alternator upgrade a few months ago. I bought mine from DIM. The 100 amp alternator comes with a serpentine belt pulley and my 92 SKCB has the V-Belt pulley so all I had to do is change the pulley off of my olds alternator and install it on the new 100 amp alternator and it works great. I also added a second battery with a Xantrex automatic battery combiner which also works great. I posted a thread in the Stereo section with pics of my alternator, second battery, and the Xantrex battery combiner as well. Hope that helps. Here is the post I placed in the stereo section. I have a 95 Sport and with a 51 amp stock alternator in it right now and would like to upgrade to the 100 amp. Did you have to do anything with the Breaker on the back of the engine? Did you bypass it? If i remember correctly there is an orange wire (charging) that goes from the Alt to this breaker and then to the battery (and starter i believe).

Is the the serpentine pulley and the v pulley identical in diameter? if not does it change the revs the Alt see or does it matter?

This information is coming from PCM before I bought my 100 amp alternator...the new 100 Amp alternator comes with a heavy gauge orange wire that has a 100 amp inline breaker built in that protects the charging wire and alternator and connects directly to the starter and does not run back to the 50 amp breaker. From what PCM told me, you leave the 50 amp breaker in the back as it is still protecting the wiring running up to the dash so you are not bypassing it and it is staying in tact and working. When you change over to the 100 amp alternator you no longer use that smaller gauge orange wire going from the 50 amp breaker up to the alternator so it is no longer in use. Make Sense? I did not measure the diameter of the serpentine pulley compared to the V belt pulley but just by eyeballing it looks very close to the same size. I spoke directly to the PCM tech guys and they told me it would work fine with no problems and for me it has so far. If you are still concerned I would talk to Ski DIM as that is where I bought mine and they are more knowledgeable than I am. Hope that helps...
