engine cutting out consistently 2000 rpm Check engine light 2000 SAN

We went to the lake last week, 5 times we have gone out no issues on a boat that had been winterized and stored for the last 10 months. I pulled away from the doc and idled outside of the no wake zone, put the hammer down and immediately the CEL came on and there was limited power to around 2000 rpm approximately. The boat may have stalled only one time the entire day and had a couple of rough starts. I stopped turned off the boat, checked the breakers, popped the engine cover looked for loose wires, checked battery cables and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I decided after a few minutes of playing around that I could feather the boat up to speed enough that the whole day wasn’t a wash amd I could at the very least pull my 10 year old around for a couple sets. Long story short we used the boat all day with the engine cutting out (trying to stay away from it keeping the Rpms low) and we had a full day at the lake. All gauges worked I could see we weren’t hot, I could see we had oil pressure.

I was at home yesterday and got to reading for a couple of hours at what the problem could have been. I checked the oil level which was fine that day, I checked the anti syphon valve screen and I checked the other vent lines on the tank(2). I checked for tangled fuel lines because we did just replace the steering cable. The vent line was free and the strainer was very clean.

the CEL will come on for two reasons only(correct me if I’m wrong). Low oil pressure switch interrupted /dead or actual low oil pressure with interrupts the switch to the ecm and the same with engine temp.

I first checked the oil pressure sending unit located just in front of the oil filter and above. Still had the light. The guage went berserk. Then I reconnected that wire, the ground wire and removed the wire from the switch in the same t block as the sending unit. That was my answer. I fired up the boat, no light, no hesitation. I hope this helps someone in my shoes.

Great diagnostics Teelerito, thanks for the share. Glad it was a simple solution for you, always a good feeling when you nail it.

Can you add a pic of the wires to help 'the less inclined'?

The second pic is the sending unit itself. Do not remove the wire from this. Do not!

Update a week later. Took the boat out amd had no issues with the check light or oil pressure. Now onto the wiring of the perfect pass.

Same issue with my 99 Air Nautique that I just purchased this month. Day two of taking it out and it gave me a good introduction to boat ownership haha. Just disconnected it like you did and all was well. Purchased a new one off ebay and will get it installed soon. Added to the growing squak list of things to do.

I agree this forum is awesome and helped me fix my friends 1979 Correct Craft San Juan with a GT-40 in it.

                  First post here.
