    Starter Motor disengaging or slipping.

The starter motor on my 95SN Ford engine does not fully engage and turn the engine over on most attempts. The starter has been removed, stripped and cleaned, bench tested fine. I also changed the starter relay after it appeared to fully engage when shorting the starter solenoid to main battery terminal. Anyone had a similar problem.

I had a similar problem on my 2001 SAN and thought it was the starter. I was actually missing a few teeth on my ring gear so the starter could not engage. It was about $1500.00 to have it repaired.

I reccommend you pull the starter off and look at the ring gear in the location that it will not start.

definetly could be damaged teeth, but sometimes they are repairable with a file or careful use of a dremel. are u positive that the starter is not only spinning but engaging as well? sometimes the contacts that push the starter gear foward can go bad and will only allow the starter to spin without actually engaging

I'll check the teeth on the flywheel, I had this before on another boat. Why does this happen, I've never seen this on a car. I assume the starter is being kicked forward to engage as this action in turn causes the rotor to spin or am I wrong. Thanks Greg.

what rotor are u referrin to?

the starter can spin without being engaged to the flywheel. an internal solenoid activates once the starter begins to spin and pushes the starter gear into the flywheel. sometimes this solenoid can go bad which results in a spinning starter, but no spinning engine. if this is the case, then it is a fairly cheap fix that doesn't require replacing the starter.

when this problem occurs, does the engine turn over?
          does the starter spin?
if so does the starter sound like its spinning faster than normal?

The engine is a ford 351. It sounds like the starter spins faster than normal, it does not turn the engine, although it appears like the engine jerks on initial engegement of the starter it drops out and spins faster than normal. A friend of mine looked at it today and says it needs a new starter because the brushes were low and segment of commutator damaged. I try a new starter. Cheers Greg

thats very strange. if thats the problem, then a new starter would probably be the way to go

I had a defect contact switch at the dash.
It looked like the starter threw, but then stopped.
With the key fully rotated as normally this occured.
Just turned the key a few degree back and it started normaly.
At first i didnt suspect the switch doing this.
Replaced it with a pushbutton switch.
