Engine does not start unless throttle pumped.

Seems related to the Holley on my 95SN. She will not fire up unless the throttle is fully pumped one or two times, fires up at full throttle. This happens hot or cold, she will not start with just a turn of the key. Any ideas please.

I'd probably take a look at what he choke is doing. Could be stuck wide open or have a bad spring.

I would guess the choke is stuck open, also one of your jets may be plugged. It sounds like a rebuild at the least. With the cover off and the spark arrestor removed try to start the engine while looking down the carb ( you might want to use a mirror. DO NOT pump it first or you won't have any eyebrows left if it backfires...) Can you see gas squirting into the bore? If not I would guess one of your jets are plugged.

Yep. Pull the spark arrester off with the engine cold and take a look at the choke plate (the top plate on the carb). If it is wide open, try to manually shut it, and see if it springs right back. Instead of a full rebuild, you could get away with a new electric choke from Ski-Dim if the spring is broken. Other options are the spring is not connected to the choke plate, or, if the choke is just stuck open, moving it around a bit could free it up.

I wouldn't recommend looking down it while trying to start it... All you need to varify is if the choke flap is open or closed before you go to start it. Turning the key alone won't have any effect on the choke plate, and to see if gas it getting in there, look at it before you crank it, then after you crank it (without moving the throttle) see if it's wet in there. Or crank it (again with no gas), then if it doesn't fire take some carb cleaner or starting fluid or something and give it a shot then crank it again. If it starts you have your problem.

if it were only happening on the cold starts, then u would have a perfectly normal carburated boat. but, this should not occur when u are all warmed up. u may have a fuel leak. as it does when sitting cold for a day or so, the fuel may be settling back towards the tank requiring u to re-prime the lines. but as everyone else pointed out, there are many other problems that could occur, so happy hunting lol.

Thank you for all the replies. The jets are open as the fuel can be seen pummped in when throttle pumped. I will check the choke, I will also see if she starts better without throttle if I hold the choke plates closed, that should tell me something. may not be able to report back to 2 weeks as going out of country on business.
