GS22 Shifts Into Reverse With Hard/loud Clunk

New 2022 GS22 shifts forward smooth as silk. However, it shifts quite hard into reverse with a loud clunk no matter how softly I try. Is this normal?

If you go between neutral and reverse multiple times in a row (without going forward) does it clunk every time or just the first time? Reason I ask is on one of my older boats I was getting a clunk when going into reverse and it turned out the prop castle nut was a little loose. Once I tightened it, no more clunking.

I have a 19 g21 and it does the same thing. I posted about it a month or so ago and it appears normal. It definitely seems out of place. A friends 19 Mastercraft XT22 is smooth as silk in forward and in reverse.. oh well.

My 2022 GS22 goes into reverse with no noise and no clunk. It’s perfectly smooth and quiet.

Definitely a clunk with my G23. Honestly bugs me. I was hoping that the recent replacement of the prop shaft & prop would of given some remedy here. Hearing/thinking/hoping it was normal, but not when others report a smooth transition, maybe not so normal.
I will be following along here...

Based on your responses, it sounds like the luck of the draw whether one shifts hard into reverse or not.

My dealer indicates they could find no problem during the 25 hour inspection so "it must be normal". Not crazy about that answer.

Still interested in hearing about anyone else's experience.

                Thanks all.

I upgraded from the PCM 40 to PCM 80 series transmission. I think the 80 series is going into most newer boats. The 80 series definitely has a noticeable clunk engaging reverse. Was told it's normal. The 40 series was smooth and quiet up until the time it was replaced.

80 series does this while they are new when used in a direct drive, but it goes away once the transmission is well broken in - a few hundred hours in our case. In the direct drive, it is cause by a slight shift in the driveshaft when going from forward to reverse. Not sure the behavior would be the same in a v-drive.
