2018 G23 doesn’t float straight

Hi Guys !

I just bought a new to me G23. I found out that at rest, it float listed to the starboard side.

I checked that all ballast are empty through the floor hatches.

Are they all like that ?

Are you really sure the ballasts are empty? Earlier G-series boats are famous for allowing water to seep into the ballast bags at rest. Eventually Nautique added valves to the inlets to prevent this, but I am not sure if that was in place for 2018 or not. Many people have had this same issue and it was due to this water seepage into the bags.

The automatic valves were a mid-year 2015 change--the ones built after 1/1/2015 had the valves. My 2015 had the filling-at-rest issue (build date was fall 2014), but only noticeable if it sat in the water over night.

Ok, check to be sure the valves are hooked up. Sometimes dealers unhook them at winterization to be sure they are left open over the winter.

I noticed on our 2nd time out this year, new '16 G to us, that we had a noticeable crest on the starboard wake under throttle. I knew the bags were emptied from our 1st maiden voyage out, so I thought well maybe it's people placement issue. I even called the previous owner while we were out on the lake. He said to empty the bags until the pumps growl (like we read on so many ballast threads here). Ah ha, as the starboard pump ran for about 5 minutes, newb problem solved. You shouldn't be listing, unless you have hidden weight gems stashed somewhere...

I triple checked again today that all 3 factory ballast were empty by opening the floor hatches and looking at the fatsac in there. They were all empty (see picture)


I added a 400lbs fatsac under the spotter seat, against the sub. With it filled at about 350lbs, the boat float perfectly level left to right.

There is not much places where the previous owner could have hidden 300-400lbs. I don't understand what is going on …

That is very odd. I've seen guys throw lead weight bags under the bags before, they lay pretty flat in a nice little row. 350 lb offset is no small bag of potatoes, for sure.
Any chance of contacting the previous owner?

Just throwing some spaghetti at the wall here...

I'll be back at the lake next weekend and will continue to look for any kind of extra ballast hidden somewhere.

At least now I know it should be floating level, something must be in there somewhere

I can't contact the previous owner, the has been bought through a dealer who took it in exchange

If you’d have said listed to port side I’d say you’ve got lead bags in there somewhere. But starboard doesn’t make any sense. How does it act when under way?

Before I added the extra bad to counterweight it, it was also listed to starboard side, at rest and under way.

It is listed enough that felt it right away after launching at the boat ramp.

Since I added the bag, it sit level at rest and under way

mycho, any solve to the mystery?

Mystery not solved yet .. but I worked on it last weekend. I reopened each floor hatches and lifted the Fatsac in there looking for the extra weight.
I found nothing but discovered a huge empty space under the helm/driver seat. This compartment is as big as the one under the spotter seat.

I also had to remove some water from my «counterweight», the boat was now listing on the port side. I am starting to think that somehow, there was water trapped somewhere on the starboard side and by running the boat the last 2 weekend, that water finally migrated to the bilge where my pumps got rid of it.

I put 30 hrs in 4 days so far and it seems to get better by itself ... that's a weird one

Thanks for the update mycho. 30 hours in 4 days, I'm jealous, I think that's what we've logged all Summer. Does sound like you've unveiled the problem, it would make sense anyway.
So, how did you access the space under the seat, I'm trying to picture that..?

No kidding, 30 hours in 4 days is some serious time on the water! Way to go! I don't want your fuel bill.
