It made me laugh a little when you said you didn't want to inherit a problem but you were asking about buying a boat
I hope you find something - I know the market is tough right now.

A lot of truth to that statement. I haven't purchased a used boat yet that didn't come with a laundry list of issues. Then again I tend to gravitate to boats I can get a "deal on". The translation of that would be boats that haven't been taken the care of the best of have just in general been forgotten about by the owner. These typically tend to be mostly lower level issues and not something like this boat where there could be concern about engine damage.

Lol. I purchased a late 80s aluminum fishing boat with a 25HP Yamaha outboard in May. Boat # 4. It's total junk, but perfect for my boys to learn how to drive a boat. And we are going to fix it up a bit and work on it together. It's wired with brown lamp cord, nothing really works (trim, bilge, lights) it leaks at most of the seams, and the seats are rough. My wife thinks we are nuts. I just laugh. We already fixed the trailer issues. I'll spare you the details. We probably clocked 20 hours and the boys love driving and wakeboarding / kneeboarding off this boat.

And for those of you who scoff at this not being safe...we have all the safety gear in check, plan accordingly and I'm teaching how to monitor electrical, engine and other systems to my boys.

Skidave That's perfect. We have a 14' aluminum, basic bench-seat boat with a 15 hp Evinrude at our cabin. It's what my wife and her siblings learned to ski behind, and it's what both of our kids learned to ski behind (talk about a flat wake!). Our kids love driving it, and our rule is that they can take it out by themselves once they have proven than they can start it by themselves (I guess that means my BIL should not be allowed to take it out, though ). Our 10-year old accomplished that this summer, and man, he loves tearing around in that thing.

Yes, I make sure that I can see him the whole time, and I won't let him out if the lake is busy, but it's a simple pleasure, and it's how kids learn.

Nice MN Ryan. Same course of action here. I have not cut them loose yet. Soon. I'm still helicopter Dad.
