H5 Engine Oil

PCM H5 or H6 engine: 2017 PCM manual says 15W40 "GF-4/SM" for over 50F temp
All the 15W40 that I find is for diesels engines and has C_ type API spec. Only a few have a /SN
What are other H5/H6 owners using?

PCM#SAP2019-01 says 5W30 seems to just apply to 2020 engines?

I have heard that PCM is telling people to use T-4 Rotella... Not 100% but I would email them to get in writing... And it is "SM" not "SN"?

Tons of opinions on this. I've been using 15-40 on the last 3 boats over the course of some 15 years. Never had a problem with any of the boats. To be truthful I'm usually more concerned with getting a good filter and have been using Wix or NAPA Gold filters for about the same amount of time. The last few years I gradually moved from straight traditional oil to a synthetic blend and for the last 2 seasons I've been using this full synthetic version of the the same 15-40 oil. Doesn't matter what they call the oil as long as it meets the specs provided by the manufacture IMO. I'm sure we'll see some other opinions as these threads seem to pull them in.

I cannot find how to contact PCM. The 15W40 that I can find even mentioning Ssomething says CK-4/SN. Not sure it was K.

As I understand SM is outdated and GF-5 spec uses SN

The PCM SAP does not limit years, but PCM website could be read for 2020

In 2019 PCM changed the recommendation for all H5/H6 motors to run Dexos2 5w-30. That is what you want to use.

I guess the newer engines have closer tolerances (so i've been told) and require thinner oil... I have always been from the school of oil should not be like water lol... That said I think in very cold areas that a thinner viscosity may be an advantage.. I used to always use Mobil1 15/40 but haven't found it in years, so T6 it is..

This is the final answer on oil for the H5/H6. This does NOT just apply to 2020+ engines. Not sure where that idea came from. This is an updated spec for ALL of those engines.
