Protec Coil Pack/EMS leaking

1993 Sport Nautique. PCM 351W, GT40 heads, Carbie. All original with Protec Coil Packs and EMS.

I am seeking some advice. I have a grey/brown/tan colored “ooze” that is leaking from what could be the EMS block that is under the coil packs. It oozes out onto the bell housing and ultimately into the bilge. It is very slow and very thick. I cannot see it drip.

I have cleaned it off maybe three times. It is hard to clean off. Thick, gooey.

The engine appears to be running perfectly.

I have opened the EMS/coil pack assembly up and it appears fully “potted” with this grey/brown potting epoxy? It is solid/hard and from what I can see not burnt or drippy.

Anyone have any ideas?

The Protec ignition is going it will leave you stranded in the near future. Replace it with a DUI one wire .

As Jeff indicates, the Nautique Parts folks have a "kit" for ProTec replacement. Nothing against Nautique Parts, but in my opinion, you can get a better solution if you do the work yourself with your own parts list...

Davis Unified Ignition Marine Performance D.U.I. Distributor can be purchased on line . Simple one wire install 60k volts . I have them on all 5 of my 351 w boats. Make sure you get the marine version and the correct rotation.

UPDATE

So I "bit the bullet" and went for a DUI 35820.

Purchased a new wiring harness, distributor, plugs and new spark plug wires from skidim.

Completed the install today.

Completely removed the Protec/Coils/wires, harness and distributor.

Rewired the primary circuit breaker and starter solenoid. Removed the 12 1/2 breaker as this is not needed. The skidim harness is almost a drop in - had to mod for some connectors only and no coil resistor.

This schematic is closest as found on the web. For my 1993 PCM 351W, there is no electric fuel pump/fuse/pressure switch and no (separate) coil. The low oil pressure and high temp switches and knock sensor are not used.



Checked TDC on the compression stroke by feeling for a pressure puff when holding the finger over No 1 spark plug hole.

New plugs set at 0.055".

Timing marks on the harmonic balancer were good. Dropped in the new distributor and called where the rotor pointed Plug 1 and then worked around installing leads in accordance with the firing order for my LEFT hand roation engine. Getting the distributer to seat in properly was quite teadous and required many tries. All good in the end.




Fired first time. Seemed to run sweet at about 10DBTC. Sounded the best it has ever sounded. I suspect the Protec system has been on the way out for a long time.

Tomorrow I will change the oil, filter and give her a polish.

Will need to wait a few days for an on-water test as I am currently covid positive so have done all this alone (that is me and the internet!)

It was a full day’s work but spread over a few days.
