Anybody Replaced Throttle Cable on a 2008 model SANTE?

I've owned my 2008 SANTE with 343 Excal motor for 14 years and has been the absolute best boat ever. I'm starting to have some throttle issues though and I'm uncertain what might be causing it. Maybe a failing cable? It will engage from neutral just fine and during acceleration it tends to skip or not stay put at the 19-22mph rpm range consistently. It will be driving along at 22 and lose throttle power, so I'm assuming the cable is slipping even though the handle isn't moving.

Has anyone replaced this cable before? How difficult of a job or is there a video somewhere?

    Thanks

I'm not sure I completely understand your description of the issue. Are you saying that it'll accelerate up to 19-22mph and then start slowing back down? Does that happen immediately? If you go back to neutral and accelerate again then it gets back up to 19-22mph and then slows down again? Do you have perfect pass or zero off? What happens when you use the speed control?

Doesn't sound like a throttle cable to me. They have crimped on fittings at both ends so there isn't anything to "slip". They can break, but then just don't have any throttle. Or they tend to get stiff, and that makes the throttle handle hard to move. I would need to understand what's happening better to offer any additional thoughts.

Thanks for the reply. When I put the throttle into gear from neutral, it shifts fine and accelerates normally. I can go up to and past 22 mph fine, it just seems when cruising at those speeds the throttle will sometimes surge faster or slower and won’t stay in that rpm range. It consistently drives 0-15 and 24-up. Like if I’m going 15 mph and give the throttle handle a little bump forward it shoots to almost full throttle and I have to back off it. I can cruise with the GPS Zero off fine without any issues

Probably not in the same wheel house, but I had a hydro strut that helped raise the stern engine compartment cushion up, that would occasionally come loose on a Supra. The end of it would lodge against the water pump hose that the perfect pass was affixed to and cause it to tighten the throttle cable. At that point the throttle would start doing some bizarre things. Have you done a close examination of the throttle cable to the engine area, anything binding, pressing, missing, or out of sorts..? Take the spark arrestor off and have someone work the throttle in & out while you take a look at what's going on back there.
        Food for thought

Sounds like it might be the throttle potentiometer. It’s an easy swap - certainly easier than the cable.

Agree with jkallen21, your Throttle Control Position Sensor is failing. That's why I asked what happens with speed control. That's a dead giveaway. If you read the engine codes, you'll have a couple of warning codes logged in the ECM.

And it would be easy to replace, but the manufacturer of the original part was bought by another company and they stopped making the part. If you remove the engine cover, you'll see the TCP right on top of the engine with the throttle cable connected to it.

PCM has replaced the part with a new part made by Livorsi. Unfortunately for the new part to work correctly, the engine ECM has to be re-programmed. I've replaced a number of these, and the new part seems more durable, but it's just a pain to get the ECM re-programmed.

I just had that exact part replaced only 2008 SANTE with 800hrs. I was told you have to buy the entire unit now . It’s not cheap but it did solve my issues of lag and my occasional engine error code. I had my dealer do it due to the reprogramming.

You've always had to buy the whole assembly. The new one is just more expensive than the old one. The sensor and the mount do come apart, but you really need to replace both parts together most of the time. The mount tends to develop cracks by the time the sensor starts to fail. I have swapped the sensors and mounts around from parts in the parts bin in a pinch to get a temporary fix.

Thanks guys! Very helpful knowing that it is likely just the sensor. I wonder how long the ECU re-program takes? Also, I'm curious if anyone offers a kit to ship to consumers or if I could ship the ECU in. Taking my boat to a dealer is a PTA

You can ship the ECM to PCM and have them re-program it.

My apologies. I thought you used to be able to just replace the sensor complement. Thanks.

Just a follow up FYI, I contacted PCM and they said i can ship the ECM to them and they charge $50 plus shipping to reprogram it
