Hi there folks,
I'm a long-time lurker on this amazing site, but first-time poster. I have a 2005 SANTE 210. The dash gauges have recently started acting up, I wanted to see if anyone here could confirm if these symptoms are consistent with a failing gateway or if it's likelier I'm looking at a different problem (or set of problems).
I was previously last out on the boat at the end of October and all of the gauges were functioning without issue, with the exception of the analog oil pressure gauge which was dead. The oil pressure reading was coming through fine to the LCD display on the tachometer and therefore I concluded it was a bad gauge. I ordered a replacement but had not gotten around to installing it.
As a side note, the servo motor in the tachometer had previously failed around June 2021, with the result that the needle was not functional and additionally would make a super annoying buzzing sound whenever it was powered. My shop replaced the gauge in the summer of 2021 with a new OEM part they happened to have lying around - a stroke of extreme luck for me since replacements are mostly impossible to come by.
Anyhow, now it's the end of December, two months later, I went to get the boat cleaned up for some friends who are coming in to town and upon startup, observed the following:
1. A constant, steady alarm tone is coming from the dash (more on this below)
2. The speedometer gauge and LCD display (water/air temp, depth) is dead, the needle does not move at all and the display is blank.
3. The tachometer gauge and LCD display seem to work - I can scroll through readings for hours, hours left, voltage, engine temp, oil pressure
4. The analog gauges on the left side of the dash work (fuel level, engine temp, voltage) except for the aforementioned oil pressure gauge which was a known issue.
To collect information on the problem, I stopped and restarted everything a few times to see if anything changed. I observed that the alarm tone went away after some period of time - once it shut off after 30 seconds, another time it droned on for several minutes, then shut off suddenly. Once on startup, the alarm did NOT come on at all. Another intermittent change I observed was that the LCD display on the tachometer would unexpectedly go blank - not consistently. If I stop and restart, it would come back on with a reading but then might go blank again. During periods when the tach LCD blanked out, the RPM needle and the other analog gauges continued to work.
I took the boat out on the water and observed that the Perfect Pass seems to be getting speed data, but I think I understand from reading that the PP system is at least partially separate from the gateway and has its own paddle wheel sensor.
As I thought about what might be causing the alarm (other than a gateway failure/malfunction) it occurred to me that since the boat has been in a wet slip for the season, and especially sitting for the past two months without moving, that algae growth on the hull could have obstructed the depth sensor and the alarm could be a "shallow warning" does that even sound plausible? Or perhaps the depth sensor itself is malfunctioning? Going on this theory, I tried to silence the alarm by simultaneously pressing the "up" and "down" buttons on the speedometer (following instructions in Faria serial bus manual) but that didn't do anything to the alarm.
As I considered other possible diagnoses for these symptoms I thought perhaps the whole speedometer gauge is simply dead but that wouldn't adequately explain why the LCD on the tachometer also blanks out intermittently.
Lastly, is a "partial" failure of the gateway even possible? Or when it goes out, would I simply expect to lose ALL gauge readings on the dash?
If you've made it to the end of this post, thanks for reading and any thoughts/ideas are certainly appreciated! Happy New Year!
Cheers,
Casey
