Pcm Excalibur carb conversion

Hi guys.

I'm looking for a bit of advice. Im trying to help my friend out with his 2004 196. He inherited the boat from his dad during COVID. Up until 2 weeks ago we hadn't see the boat for 3 years due to it being in France and we're in the UK.
When the boat was last used it was diagnosed with a faulty ecu. The ECU and FCC are missing from the boat, at this point we have no clue who the mechanic was that diagnosed the issue or if he has the removed parts.
Due to the cost of replacement parts here in the UK we wondered if a carb conversion was more cost effective? He has a 4160 carb already. Has anyone done the conversion? I've done a bit of research and found a few people had but I couldn't find any decent write ups.

I haven't heard of anyone doing that conversion. Not to say it couldn't be done, but if all it needs is an ECU and a FCC, I would just try to get those parts. Maybe contact NautiqueParts.com and see what they would charge to send those over to you.

I would never go back to a carb but that's my personal opinion.
In some cases automotive ECU's can be converted like on the older GT40.
You can get one of these on junkyard for $50.
Do some research. There are also plug and play aftermarket ecu,s. I use a Megasquirt on my GT40.
If you not in a hurry I travel from the US to England in July. If you find one here I can bring it.

A conversion to carburetor and distributor should not be all that difficult. Key parts needed: 1) carburetor [you said that you have a 4160]; 2) intake manifold; 3) distributor [and possibly wires]; 4) fuel pump.

I have a back-up plan for my 2001 Ski Nautique with the GT40 engine. In the event that the ECM fails, I could easily retro-convert back to carb and distributor. For my installation, I would go with an Edelbrock Performer intake, QuickFuel marine carb (M-650) and an HEI distributor from Davis Unified Ignition (Performance Distributors). I'm "old school" and I like playing with carbs and distributors. EFI is great, but I'm fully confident that I can equal or improve on the EFI performance with a carb/distributor configuration.

As Peter6000 states above, the MegaSquirt may be an option for you. I must admit that I've considered the Megasquirt as an option...
