I wouldn't necessarily avoid a boat just because it falls into the Gateway years.
A gateway bypass is about $1,400, and then the problem is solved. That's a lot of money, but not so much that it would deter me from buying an otherwise-great boat.
That said, the gateways that will likely fail are the ones where the boats still had pitot tubes and they fed into the gateway box (2003 - 2005, I believe). The later gateways that relied on paddlewheels are less likely to fail because there is usually no water intrusion into those.

I believe paddlewheel input for the gateways started in 2006.

I have a 2008 SAN 230 and the gateway only goes to 999.9 hours - it has also had some other issues. I have never liked to look of the analog replacement but this link provided by Jeff shows a kit I have never seen before. I see it says they are as of July 22' shipping some of these... If it was is pictured in the first photo, it is much more appealing to the eye. But the second photo shows the old style looking gauges - that don't match. Jeff, any clarification - is it the newer looking gauges that they are now making for the replacement kit?
To mitigate gateway failure, some of us with pitot year gateways have removed and plugged the speedo pickup tubes. It takes about 10 minutes and is easily reversible. You loose functionality of the dash speedo but if you have perfect pass, you already have a better speedo than the pitot dash speedo.
The way I read it, the big gauges are now being replaced with these. The smaller white gauges would also be provided, I would hope. While these big gauges are more pleasing to the eye, I am completely confused as to why they would supply gauges clearly designed for outboards or I/O boats.
A trim gauge? Really?
Plus, the voltmeter will be redundant, since there will be a second smaller one provided too.
The 5" Faria Chesapeake speedometer, paired with the Faria tachometer that NautiqueParts sells with the integrated fuel gauge would be a much better choice. They would be a perfect match to the smaller gauges in the kit, and would not have unnecessary or redundant gauges.
This was the original equipment in the kit, and both of those gauges are still available, so I can't imagine why they changed the offering.

I remember reading somewhere, can't remember where and can't seem to find it now, that there were several 100s of people on the waiting list for that bypass kit. And at the rate they were being produced, it was going to take years to get a kit. It's possible that I may have this wrong, probably a good idea to call Nautique Parts and get all the facts if you're considering buying a boat that'll need the conversion.

IMO, the entire Faria gateway / replacement gauge thing is a debacle. Nautique should be embarrassed and to a better job delivering solutions for their customers. I feel lucky that that so far, I am unscathed. I feel bad for those in the middle of this.
I called Nautiqueparts to inquire about the gateway bypass.
they said they are on backorder until at least next year. they also said they have so many people on the waitlist that they are not adding anyone else to it

I can not agree more. Debacle is a nice term. The fact that there have been so many problems with these, including at least one year in which they only designed them to reach 999.9 hours and then they stop recording time is such a basic oversight that it is crazy it was even allowed. When this happened to me and I spent A LOT of time researching the issue, I was shocked that I could not even buy one if wanted, at full price. Nautique's official stance is that they point the finger at Faria for making a faulty Gateway, and when talking to a senior engineer at Faria, they say that they build them the way that Nautique specifies, and that Nautique won't allow them to even repair or work on them. This was a few years ago. The analog replacement kit was very expensive and doesn't come close to matching the gauges that came with the boat. The top photo that Jeff provided above is a big improvement - and I would have most likely have gone that route had that been an option, but I have already spent a bunch on a Simrad and an aftermarket gateway that plugs into the diag harness.. And I agree NautiqueJeff the trim gauge is a little nuts... Wonder if it could be wired to some other function? I don't know what... Maybe a fun meter lol
The black face gauges are WAY better than the standard issue gauges they are supplying with the kits. shag can you share pics of your Simrad setup? I have to believe if Whitelake is turning away customers, that this is a decent opportunity for someone to start building these kits? The wiring harness is "complicated" but, not that big a deal! Hmmm

I will get some photos ... I had to find a company that could build a gateway so I could have the info sent via NMEA to the Simrad... Problem is that it does not have a fuel gauge. There is a gauge that VERATRON makes, that functions like a multi function display, and you can get a fuel sender adapter. It is a nice looking gauge but I don't think it is the same size as the bigger speedo and tach, so you would have to fabricate a round panel to adapt it. That would also work from NMEA signal. The gateway I had made was manufactured by Fox Marine. This should be the correct one; Just plugs into the diagnostic connection. They did not have one that worked for those years, so I had to send them mine so they could determine the build.
