We have just purchased a 2001 Super Air Nautique. Dealer just installed two new ballast pumps but cannot get them to pick up water. Pumps are running, seacocks are open, and valves dials are set to fill but it will not pick up water. Dealer cannot figure it out. It is no addition charge to us so I told them to just button it up so we can take delivery. I will eventually pull the tanks anyway but I would like to figure out what is going on. Your help is appreciated.

Likely they just need to pull a prime. Run the boat in the water, and try to fill them while underway. If they installed reversible pimps, it could be that the wiring is flipped on the double pole double throw switch to the pump and the fill/empty functions are actually reversed so that when you think you are trying to fill, the pump is running in the direction to empty. If it’s an aerator pump, as Jeff send, the lines need an initial prime to work so the boat should be floating to help with that.Comment

If they're reversible Johnson style pumps and they're working opposite to the switch position another less obtrusive solution is to flip the pump head on the motor. The actual pump can be mounted in 2 configurations which are 180 degrees from each other. Flipping the pump head 180 degrees will reverse the operation of the pump without messing with the wiring. Even though I'm comfortable with boat wiring my general rule of thumb is not to start pulling wires off connectors unless absolutely necessary.
If you have aerator pumps.... well, never mind....
