Fix garbage can door factory flaw with spacer?

Bought replacement hinges for my garbage can lid. Pretty scratched up and half the chrome covers were missing.

The screws also wiggle so I will add some resin to remove the wiggle.

But if you look the lid, sits below the gunnel half of the hinge. 8it bends the hinge upward on the hatch. Probably what caused the chrome stick on covers to disappear over the years.


It looks like, some sort of spacer would hold it flush and won’t bend the hinge probably preventing it from wiggling the screws loose.

Has anyone added on some sort of stainless plate similar to what the catch uses to close the lid?

The other two photos I stuck the hinge underneath the hatch to demonstrate a spacer to level the two panels.

In that last photo is the hatch plate, I was showing as an example spacer. Looks like it would be an OK spacer to maybe buy a couple to raise the hatch level

Spacer wouldn't hurt for sure... should be fairly easy to make with a grinder and drill. Just source the correct thickness material and cut some out to mimic the hinge base shape.

I made similar spacers years ago for my 03 210SANTE hatches to space the latch pin downward just a bit. They didn't like latching correctly and would randomly pop open underway or pulling down the road. I used aluminum because I only needed a very small amount of spacers and the material was easier to find.

I grabbed a set of these off Amazon. Double stack if they were too thin. But that way if I put four spacers, it'll tay flush when people step up on it.

But obviously, I cringe when people step up on my clean seadeck

I would rather see a spacer made to fit the footprint of the hinge that utilizes all 3 mounting screws. With only part of the hinge surface being supported I would think there's a possibility of loosening over time, or that outer screw being pointless to holding down the hinge because nothing is supporting it underneath.

I might be wrong, but I'm too OCD (CDO) to leave a gap under part of the hinge.

OCD definitely plays a factor :-) with the hatch plate to pull it closed at one end. And people step on it towards the hinge, that's probably why mine would get loose over the years.

So adding the stainless spacers under the lid in a couple key spots would make the hatch lay flat, even when folks step up on it.
