87 octane only available at the Marina

Just curious for those with the XR7 motors what you're doing, if anything, when the only available gas is 87 octane?.

Octane booster, run it like you stole it?

Probably a good question for PCM. I know I have called them in the past with questions and they have been helpful, not sure lately... It's been years since then. I know some of those motors are requiring higher octane... With technology, you would think that the motor would see the lower octane and adjust accordingly... Retard spark or something...

The only engine that requires high-octane fuel is the supercharged one.

This the response I just received from PCM

              "Good Afternoon,

We do not test with or recommend the use of octane boosters. Octane boosters do not have a measurement that tells how much to add to get from 87 to 91/93 octane. There is no recommendation we can provide for this matter."

              Thank you,

I'm surprised you can't get premo at the marina! Here in MN, that's all I've ever seen on the water. Then again, you can't get non-oxy 87 octane in MN, as far as I'm aware--it's all 91+.

It's CA. We are just so special here. I mean I can go to the river and drive across the bridge and pay $1.70 less per gallon in Arizona! This state is a piece of work

Even though we have premium fuel available on the lake, it's typically about $1.5-2.0 more per gallon than off the lake, so during the summer when the water is high enough to keep it on the lift we just use 4 of the 5 gallon VP race jugs and they paid for themselves within a couple of tanks of gas just from the savings in gas cost. We get about a third of a tank out of them which keeps us pretty well filled up unless we go hard with a big crew.

I have about 10 of those VP had cans, it's all good. We will be on house boat at Shasta, plenty of Marinas, just no 91 Octane.

We have a place in Canada on Lake Erie. You can get premium there but with taxes the prices is nuts. They even bought into the whole carbon tax insanity so you pay into that as well. I have 4 VP race jugs that I rotate through the week then whenever anyone goes back to the states that person takes the empties and we start again. We're only 1/2 hour from the states so it's not that bad. Still a PITA but manageable. That and this will be the first year going back to our cottage due to all the covid restrictions they had.
