XR7 vs ZZ8 for P23

Like the title suggests I'm looking at picking up a P23. I've narrowed it down to two boats, similar options and similar price, one has the XR7 and the other the ZZ8. I've heard the ZZ8 is a better option but I'm not sure why. Any thoughts would be appreciated also doesn't have to be paragon specific if you've had the xr7 or the zz8 in the G series boats I appreciate your thoughts!

ZZ8 SuperCharged engine tends to have a lot more issues than the non-supercharged engines. Personally, I'd go with the XR7 for that reason.

The early Paragons got the XR7/XS7 engines because the ZZ8 was not ready for production yet. As soon as it was, they started using those.

The XR7/XS7 is a proven engine in the G-series, and either one should be great in a Paragon. I had a ZZ8 Paragon last year, and it was great, but I have also had XS7 boats in the past, and those have been great too.

Thanks for the response! That’s what I was looking for! While they are both great power plants would you pick one over the other? How did fuel consumption compare? Was one smoother than the other? I know I can’t go wrong either way just wanting to be as informed as possible!

Honestly, I wouldn't let the choice between those two engines have that much bearing on the decision. They both drink gas, but I didn't notice too much difference in that aspect between the two.

Two things to keep in mind:

1. The XR7 is 550 HP and 575 Lb-Ft of torque. The ZZ8 is 600 HP and 608 Lb-Ft of torque. The difference is minimal, but it is a difference.

2. The ZZ8 is slightly newer technology. Not sure if that really means anything or not, but the perception of value may be there at resale time.

Other than resale possibly being slightly better with the ZZ8, I would not worry too much about which of those two engines are in the boat. Both are beasts!

Thanks, you're right. I was thinking ZR7 7.4L engine. I'm not a big fan of supercharged engines in boats due to the extra heat.
