Well I have just about had it with my boat and I feel compelled to indulge everyone with my first boat story!
3 years ago I scored a non running 1987 Ski Nautique in need of some tender loving care. I was under the impression it just hadn't been used in a few years...
I actually paid some knucklehead I know who said he'd get it running for me and when he failed to get it running, it was due to the starter relay not being grounded!
Within a short amount of time I came to find the milky oil that would be a result of a cracked block!!
Fast forward a year and I found a used pcm "marine motor" on ebay which I bought for $900.
It sat until this July and it's been a chase ever since!
Started by pulling motor/tranny and took off the transmission, pressure plate, and flywheel off both motors. I figured it best to keep the ski nautiques borg warner bw71. So I swapped that setup on the replacement motor.
Once dropping in I broke a rear motor mount without knowing the proper way to adjust.
I wasn't getting spark which ended up being the electronic ignition module in the distributer, but I went ahead and did basic tune up items, cap, wires, plugs.
No matter what I did I couldn't get it to run. It had gas, spark, and air. I checked top dead center I don't know how many times. I reached out to the guy who sold me and he confirmed it's reverse rotation... but unfortunately he was wrong. I was using a reverse rotation arrco permanent magnet starter. Cranking the wrong rotation!!!
So I get that resolved but pulling the tranny and spinning the tranny pump housing 180, prepping for a new prop, and getting the correct rotation starter.
I put the starter in and and it sounds like it's not disengaging the flywheel, which is awful sounding. The boat was starting up but I had to turn it off because it was chewing the flywheel...
Today I went to a starter rebuilder of 30+ years. The starter that came with the motor I bought was from a manual transmission 351 auto. The marine one that is just a motor had a pinion gear that couldn't fully disengage. For whatever reason the permanent magnet starter does not have the same problem. Still confused about this. The motor is a pleasurecraft 1972 block. This still perplexes me a little.
Anyways, I slap the new one on, put some gas in the carb, and it fired up but gas isn't quite getting to the carb so it died. I know these can take a minute to prime so I go for round two and it doesn't start. Wasn't too worried about it. I happen to look down and see tranny fluid! Which I assume is from the tranny pump seal. Everyone I talked to said to just unbolt and spin it 180, not to pull it out.
So now I will pull the transmission tomorrow to confirm it's coming from there!
There are many things I should have done differently, but I am where I am and was curious if anyone would have any comments, questions, or suggestions?
Also if anyone know what part number for the gasket or seal I likely need that would be greatly appreciated!
