Keypad Testing

Hello,

Does anyone know if this keypad can be tested to make sure it is working properly? The main wiring harness is out of the boat at the moment and I need to know if this still good or needs to be replaced. This is out of a 2001 SAN 210.

It'll be pretty difficult to test out of the boat. It's a smart controller that connects to the boat's Canbus and communicates to other parts of the boat via digital messages sent over the Canbus. There should be 4 wires in the harness. 12V, ground, Can High, and Can Low. You can connect the power and ground and it should power up. But without something to receive and interpret the Canbus messages, and send back the responses it expects, it'll be very hard to know if it's fully working.

But connecting up the 12V and ground to a car battery should at least tell you if it works at all or is fried. And maybe that's what's important at this point since I recall that your boat had a short that melted the wiring harness. If 2 of the wires are red and black, then they would be 12V and ground.

I went through this on my friend's 2001 last year. His boat wouldn't crank and I was trying to figure out if it was the left key pad or the controller. This boat is pre-CAN bus, think it's serial port communication maybe. If you contract nautique directly, they have a test bench and you can send it to them to test. There really isn't another way that I could find and nautique had no other recommendation either. My problem actually ended up being the right touch pad was bad. Once I unplugged it, the boat would crank and run fine, even though the right touch pad has nothing to do with that. It was taking down the system. Someone on correct craft fan said that 95% of the time there's a problem, it's the keypad not the controller.

Good call bcd. I contacted Nautique technical support and they said I could send in the keypad, along with the starter keypad and the PCM for testing. I don't believe these were damaged as they show no evidence of burn, but it will be nice to verify that these are all ok prior to re-installing the main wiring harness. Thanks for the tip.
