New Engine for 2007 196 Limited

Sorry to be a a pain as guessing this has been thrashed out many times. New to this site and cant seem to locate appropriate info. In Australia so info limited here too.
I can, and wish to, purchase a new PCM 343 excal for my 2007 196. Can buy them in the crate over here thankfully. The boat is in poor condition and doing a major refurb. Like to do gauges also however concerned about wiring considering it has gateway which i have limited understanding of. Everything goes to gateway and it makes all the decision?? Is that right or wrong?? Is this an issue for connection of the new engine also? I have read some stuff about hour meter issues, as with mine been on 999hrs for many years. Can i get rid of this gateway and run a more basic setup or is it married to this boat.
If it has been thrashed out before can someone direct me to the threads on this site to get that info? Or please explain a little more. Thanks Coops

G'Day Coops . A new 343 is an expensive way to get this boat up to scratch. What issues does the current Engine have? I.e. is it running is it repairable? The Gateway receives the info from the engine and sends it to the gauges.... engine should still work if gateway is bad.. are the gauges currently working? Hours are stored on the ECU of the boat NOT the gateway the isuue is the Faria Gateway in that boat can only display up to 999 hours ECU on the engine will store and still have the accurate hours on the engine.

      Hey Spud,
I am running a little club up in North QLD. Got a few members and we churn quite a few hours. I have 3200 on the other boat and it is running well. Prior to that we used this other boat 2007. It has the 330 and was noticeably tired toward the end. As discussed not sure about hours but thinking more than the other. We have trouble up here getting anyone that can talk to our ECUs. No one has the software and connection cable.
Anyway we are looking for a medium term option for our Club boat. The one in use now runs well but needs a rest and some running gear maint itself. So want to hit this while we are still up and running.
New boats are so expensive now. They are also bigger and in my opinion less fuel efficient. We have members who let us use there 200s and in one case, the latest Ski Nautique for Tournaments so all good on that front. Just looking for an option for a reliable, bang for buck, fuel efficient tractor for the relentless hours we put on week after week in the Club. I love the 196 for this. However that old engine is noticeably soft and that doesn't quite cut it for people training, as comp boats are then too strong. The plan was new 343. $25K. Its the cost effective option for a reliable boat that will probably do us for 5-7.
Everything was running in the old boat or used to anyway. We have poached a few parts.
Can i just whack a new crate engine in it. Can i get replacement gauges that suit the gateway anyway? How do i know if the gateway actually does work? Didnt need a code to start it. Will zero off plug into new engine. I have a whole bunch of maybes in my mind.
Any help would be much appreciated.
      Cheers Coops

Is it a limited or Team edition 196? Both of these run the Faria gateway. SE does not run a gateway and has a keyed ignition rather than keypad for starting. If you have (or had) gauges working in it the gateway should be ok. If the gauges are not working or intermit in function it can be a sign of a bad / failing gateway . Having said all that it is more unusual for a a late model gatewat like in an 07 to go bad than earlier gateways.

Has the 330 in it currently ever had a freshen up? This could be your most cost effective solution rather than a complete repower. These engines (late model GM 5.7 Vortec) are good for 6000 plus hours some lots more with a basic freshen up and will pull like a never boat. Add the larest Stargazer 3Event with a ZBox and for 10-12 k AUD you will have an awesome slalom tractor once again. In my humble opinion the 196 is the BEST slalom tractor ever made.

If going the full repower make sure the power package has the E Controls ECU that is compatible with ZeroOff.

If gauges are a worry, I used the kit linked below to take the gateway box out of the equation. It was pretty easy to install and they are fine gauges.

Interested in what the issue with the engine is, did you do a compression test?
