I pulled my rudder port on my 2008 220 due to a leak in the thru-hull-fitting. I was surprised to find a 2010 manufacture date on the port; meaning it was replaced (apparently poorly) at some point before I bought the boat in 2018. Was even more surprised to find absolutely zero evidence it ever had packing cord. Remarkably, the o-rings and grease seemed to be enough to stop water intrusion thru the shaft.
Anyway, I am looking for tips / hacks for the re-install. I will use 3M 5200 sealant and make sure all surfaces are clean, smooth and wax free. Particularly interested in thoughts on how not to squeeze too much 5200 out before it cures. Also curious how many layers of 3/16" packing cord to use. I've seen recommendations from 2 to 4.
Thanks in advance.
