    Temp sensor not sending

Hi! New here but have learned a ton already! Thank you guys!

2001 Super Air Nautique with GT40, new to me---when loaded with ballast, tops out at ~2800 rpms BUT eliminating that it's going into S.L.O.W given check engine light on dash is not illuminated tho same light checks on at initial start.

Related, I just put in new faria gauges cluster; temp gauge reads 0/nothing but by grounding signal post it shoots to max. (So not a gauge issue.) Grounding temp sensor wire on motor does not trigger any gauge movement, however, and Multimeter failed to detect the 4.9ish anticipated volts in the sensor even with ignition ON. (Replaced with new sensor, so not sensor issue.) Interestingly, starting engine with temp sensor disconnected, the boat knows it almost immediately--- so there must be SOME signal at work.

Today I throttled up to 4k rpm while boat at dock with drive not engaged, but didn't try this same high idle on Sunday when boat was giving the 2800 rpm issue---I suppose this would have proved not in SLOW.

My last guesses are; boat IS in slow but no indicator light; a hiccup in ECU (port 24 I believe); issue with Correct Cruise by PP (which doesn't seem to work but somewhat still connected); or worst case, compression?

Thanks! I'm pretty adamant I can figure it out with help, motor starts right up every time, single owner that serviced it for 20 years so thinking it can't be THAT bad---
