How many hours on the boat?

Sounds a little bit like shaft end-play to me. I've had that happen when the captive bearing on one end of a shaft is going and it lets the shaft shift back and forth. On any gearbox or transmission, when a shaft has bearing on both ends, one end is captive and the shaft floats in the bearing on the other end. That way the heat expansion of the shaft doesn't put undue side load on the bearing. When the captive bearing starts to fail, the helical gears will cause the shaft to shift back and forth when the direction of rotation changes or when the transmission is running without load.

I had to put a transmission in my 200 at about 1500 hours. Fortunately for me, this happened before Covid when the much stronger 80A transmissions were pretty reasonably priced. The price on a new 80a upgrade kit for the 200 blows my mind now.

You can't get parts for the 40a anymore, but for something like a bearing, it's probably a pretty standard part. The trick will be getting things like gaskets if you have to tear it apart. If the transmission already has a lot of hours, it may not be worth it since the clutch packs may not a lot life left.

But then again, it's just an educated guess based on the kind of sound it's making.
