I would look at MAP sensor, Injectors and ignition timing.

Jonny - Where is the MAP sensor? Any chance you might have a part number?

MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. Tells the ECM (computer) the pressure / vacuum of the air coming into the engine. That, in turn, provides data for the ECM to tell the injectors how much fuel to apply. if the injectors and fuel system are having problems, then the engine feels sluggish and won’t reach max potential. Look at fuel injectors, fuel pressure regulator and FCC or fuel control cell (filter and high pressure pump) and low pressure fuel pump. If the ignition timing is good, then many problems can be traced back to the fuel delivery mentioned above.

Your engine is 30 years old. Parts wear out. I’ll look around for my list of part numbers. You don’t have to use PCM parts, as Ford used most all these parts in other applications. RockAuto.com has most of what you need (FCC excluded). You should be able to swap out IAC, MAP, TPS, injectors, regulator, low pressure pump and fuel filter for under $500.
