    replacing 2001 PCM GT-40 thermostat

Any hints on getting the bolts holding the thermostat cover off? My 2001 PCM GT-40 is overheating. The impeller is new and I just rechecked it so I am assuming the thermostat is staying closed. I put a 1/4" Allen wrench in one of the bolt ends but it is not budging. I don't want to break anything! Advice appreciated before I haul it to the nearest dealer more than an hour away to let them deal with it.

No need for a dealer just yet. Soak the bolts with a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. Apply multiple times. Let it sit overnight. You may need the hex key / socket with a big ratchet for leverage. You can test your thermostat to see if it is the problem or not. Heat up some water in a pan to 180 degrees and drop the thermostat in. If the thermostat opens in the hot water, then you know that something else may be causing the overheating condition. If the thermostat doesn't open, then you likely have solved the problem. I used a 160 degree thermostat on my GT40 engine.

One thing to consider...the temperature sending unit for a GT40 is located on the engine circulating pump. It may be a good time to look at that as they can fail and provide a false reading. Under $40 for a bit of "insurance". SkiDim.com has 'em.

Lastly, an Infra Red "gun" is a good tool to have. Not very expensive, but very useful for "shooting" temps at various points on the engine. It can help you pinpoint trouble spots.
