Need help. When the engine is started, it moves forward on its own

    Hello everyone,

I am a member of the Hosei University Water Ski Club in Japan.

Our boat is not working properly and we need your help.

    Can someone please help?

My team owns a Ski Nautique 200. When the boat's engine is started, it moves forward even though the throttle is not pushed forward. Despite moving the throttle backward, the boat does not move in reverse. When the throttle is pushed backward, an abnormal rattling sound can be heard near the transmission.

Does anyone know of a good solution for this problem? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The most likely cause (but not the only possible cause) based on your post would be the damper plate has let loose. Lots of things can contribute to one letting go like aggressive shifting and hours in general. The plate acts as a damper between the engine and the transmission. Here's a good video on flex plate / dampers.....

Your PCM 40a transmission is broken. More than likely the forward clutch drum is cracked. This is a very common failure on 200's prior to the switch to the much more robust PCM 80a transmission.

Parts are no longer available for the 40a so your only real option is to upgrade to the 80a transmission. Here's a link to the upgrade kit.

          https://skidim.com/transmission-kit-pcm-gm-80a-1-23-1/

The kit includes a new damper plate and the new much larger oil cooler that goes with the 80a transmission. Unfortunately, the price of this kind of stuff has skyrocketed in the last few years. This kit was only about $2k when I did my 200 a few years ago.

Thank you for all the helpful information you provided. Luckily, I was able to find a cheap used transmission in Japan. I'm going to install it. I was going to buy a new 80A, but as you all told me, it would be a big expense due to the weak yen and inflation. Also, our engine has 8000 hours on it, and we don't have the money. I'll try to save up so I can buy a new boat the next time it breaks down. Thank you for all the helpful information you provided. Thank you so much.
