2010 super air nautique 230 bigger prop????

I just sold my older Mastercraft X5 and have a 2010 super air nautique 230. it seems like my nautique struggles to get going compared to the Mastercraft. the MC yanked me out of the water on a slalom and now I'm dragging a lot further. I realize the boat is twice as heavy...is that just the way it is now? when I'm loaded up with water and surfing it seems to struggle to get up to speed. just wondering if I could put a bigger propeller on it or is there something I'm missing? thanks

What engine is in the 230? What are the specs on the prop that's on it? What RPM and speed does it run at wide open throttle?

I suspect your 230 will also yank you out of the water for slalom. Surf is another story. You can go down in prop pitch and gain some low end torque but you lose top end speed. When I added ballast to my 230 it struggled to get up to speed. It had the 343 engine and an ACME 1235 propeller on it. That’s a common setup but not the only one. I ended up going to the ACME 2079. At that point I had about 3500lbs of lead and ballast plus the boat, passengers, and gear to push. The 2079 did it admirably but at the expense of top end. That went from about 40-45 to about 35. It really depends on your setup and your goals.

i had the 1235 on my 08 230; worked very well for me - my setup was primarilly for surfing with between 3.5-4k poinds of ballast + 3-6 people.

You simply can’t compare the X5 hole shot to a 230. It’s going to be nowhere near what that d-drive x5 was. Not to mention The 08-2013 nautiques were very limited in props due to tight clearances. What prop is currently on there ? The 1235 is a good choice but if you want maximum hole shot giving up couple MPH on the top end go Acme 2079.

You probably do not have the smaller 343 engine.

              Thanks for all the reply’s…
I have a ZR409 in the boat. It has a 1235 on it now. I’m in no need to go fast with this boat since my barefoot days are over. we mostly surf with an occasional wakeboard. Every once in a while, I pull out my slalom ski.
I’m not sure what the RPM is at full power I will check that out tomorrow when I take it out. But well surfing at around 11 miles an hour it’s around 2800 Rpm
I realize these are two completely different boats, my whole life I skied behind the direct drive and I guess I got used to getting yanked up quite fast. I can get used to this also. I will consider the other prop, though.
              appreciate the help

You have the right engine and setup currently. Have you tried skiing with front ballast full? I ski quite a bit behind my 210 and few laps behind a 230 on occasions, Running the front ballast fiull. Definitely helps.

Very good idea, and yes I have tried it. It does help. I’m happy with the setup. Here in Florida we can ski all year. Life is good!!

Correct - boat had the ZR6 in it, not the 343

I used to know the approximate surf rpms at 11.2mph with my setup - i could not dig that up, but right around 3k rpms does seem familiar.

When i got the 230 (had sat for a few years with prior owner), acceleration getting up to surf speed was not what i was expecting it to be. I changed the plugs and plug wires and that livened things up.
If the boat hasnt had plugs changed in the past 2+ years, id recommend swapping them as it may be a contributing factor (not as big as a prop change).

After doing some research on the web when i got the 230, I landed on replacing plugs every 2 years and wires every 5 years as the maintenence intervals I chose for those 2 parts.

(Plugs = ACDelco 12680072; PN = 41-110 Professional Iridium Spark Plug. Wires PN = RK120021A)

Plugs and wires...such a strange thing to replace so often but you are 100% correct.

Thanks!! It was “serviced” before I got it. But everyone has their own meaning to that word. I’ll replace plug and wires. I’m sure that’ll help.

I am running an ACME 2079 on my 2020 230. The hull has an inch of clearance. It pulls me up skiing and takes off surfing well. Call ACME up. They are very helpful.
